Oil Pastel Pastel comes from its Italian name “pastello”, a derivation of the word pasta, meaning paste.

History of Oil Pastels -The first oil pastels created in 1927, but seen as a children’s medium. -In 1947 Picasso and Henri Goetz desired an artist quality oil pastel. -Other companies began producing oil pastels in the early 1980’s.

Qualities - Oil pastels are sticky in nature, however, they be come less sticky and easier to work with as they are warmed by the hand and by the friction of the paper. Because of this, it is a good idea to leave the wrapper on as long as possible.

Techniques -Stippling -Impasto -Sgraffito -Wash

A technique of applying pastel in a broken pattern of small marks to produce an attractive play of colors that mix optically. Stippling

A technique in which the pastel is pressed hard onto the support leaving a thick, opaque deposit of pigment. Impasto

Scrapping through an overlaying color using a sharp tool to reveal a color underneath. Sgraffito
