The “F” Word

Women’s Studies Women’s studies is a direct extension of the women’s movement of the 1960’s. Consciousness Raising Meetings –women would gather informally to discuss issue related to women those meetings turned into academic courses The personal is political – often time what happens is life is not just a personal issue but a societal issue. Ex. Domestic violence or 1 in 5 college women will be a target for attempted sexual assault or rape Many aspects of women’s lives are simply ignored or dismissed as unimportant compared with most aspects of men’s lives. First WMST class was at San Diego State University in 1970

What is Women’s Studies? “Women’s studies is the examination of women’s experiences that recognizes our achievements and addresses our status in society. Women’s studies puts women (in all our diversity) at the center of inquiry and focuses on our reality as subjects of study. This is different than the traditional enterprise of women as objects of study. Being the object means that researchers theorize about women’s lives without women’s input, placing women in a subordinate position to men. Instead women as subjects of study implies both active agency (power and authority) on women’s part and a challenge to male domination and other systems of inequality like racism and classism. Women’s studies also involves the study of gender as a central aspect of human existence.. Gender involves the way society creates, patterns and rewards our understanding of femininity and masculinity. Women’s studies explores our gendered existence: what it means to be feminine or masculine and how this interacts with other aspects of our identity, such as our race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and sexuality.

Ways feminists have made the world better feminists-have-made-the-world-better-for- women feminists-have-made-the-world-better-for- women

Feminism The "Truth" according to Rush Limbaugh: Feminism was established "to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream of society"

Feminism Feminism is a socialist, anti-family, political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians. Pat Robertson

Feminism I listen to feminists and all these radical gals-most of them are failures. They’ve blown it. Some of them have been married, but they married some Casper Milquetoast who asked permission to go to the bathroom. These women just need a man in the house. That’s all they need. Most of the feminists need a man to tell them what time of day it is and to lead them home. And they blew it and they’re mad at all men. Feminists hate men. They’re sexist. They hate men- that’s their problem. Jerry Farwell

Feminism What did you notice about the last three slides? What did they all have in common? One of the things about equality is not just that you be treated equally to a man but that you treat yourself equally to the way you treat a man. Marlo Thomas Every time we liberate a woman, we liberate a man M. Mead Feminism directly confronts the idea that one person or set of people has the right to impose definitions of reality on others. Wise and Stanley

Feminism Because I am a woman, I must make unusual efforts to succeed. If I fail, no one will say, “She doesn’t have what it takes.” They will say “Women don’t have what it takes.” Clare Boothe Luce “I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a door mat or a prostitute. “ Rebecca West “ You don’t have to be anti-man to be pro woman.” Jane Lewis
