This chapter focuses on what the Party has done to sex (and the instinct that surrounds it). Winston thinks back to Katharine, a woman he was married to for fifteen months and a brainwashed follower of the party, and a prostitute he encountered in He describes his reaction to the sexual act. CHAPTER PREVIEW

Katharine – Her whereabouts have been unknown for about the last ten years. They were not able to have children. She hated sex, but encouraged it because she believed it was their “duty to the Party!” Prostitute – Woman who sells herself for $2 NEW FACES

Sex; the sexual act itself and instincts The instinct can be stronger than the rational mind, so the Party tries to “dirty” the act and make it seem unpleasant. However, the party cannot abolish the instinct. ITEMS/IDEAS TO KNOW
