Questions, questions...

Quick Start!  Go to -  You have, oooh, maybe 3 minutes? How much do you remember? Screenshot your result to use later!

The solar system can be spectacular...  This is our SUN, taken in X-Rays, in 1994, by a Japanese satellite.  Looks a bit different from the one outside, huh?

The solar system can be spectacular...  This photo was taken by Skylab in the mid- summer of 1973.

The solar system can be spectacular...  Love this shot of Saturn, taken by Voyager 1 at its closest point to the planet, just about to turn away

The solar system can be spectacular...  Crew of Apollo 17 took this in December  Guess the planet!

The solar system can be spectacular...  A bit self- indulgent of me – but just LOOK at this shot of the earth from the moon, taken by the Apollo 11 crew

So we live in a pretty cool place!  Well, pretty cold, really, if you think about the temperature of space...  And you may need to, because you are about to plan and equip an expedition.  You’re going to ONE of the planets in the outer solar system – one we haven’t visited before.

I’m WHAT?  Well, not on your own, obviously. You’ll have backup. But the research you do, and the conclusions you reach, will be real.

OK – where do I start?  HOLD YOUR HORSES. (Actually, you cannot take horses...)  Here’s the plan... Get into threes or fours. Like I said, you’ll need backup and we only have 3 weeks left... Gotta work out the kit you need Gotta work out how long it will take Gotta work out how much it will cost Umm – gotta decide where you’re going!

Where could I go?  Well, we’ve DONE the Moon (though I’d sign up to go if it’s offered!)  And NASA is too busy playing with Mars  So, what’ve we got left..?

Where could I go?  OK – in your groups... Go through the other planets in the solar system. Can you visit them? If not – why not?

Umm – how do I look?  Well use PROPER search stuff – the Boolify stuff from earlier this year would be a good idea!  And... Ever heard of BOOKS? Need no electricity, no logins, portable...???

And if your Head is EXPLODING...  Ohhhh, All right! Have a hint or two (A bit serious, this one..) ce/space/solar-system (sorry, our STUPID filtering system won’t let me shorten this for you!) ce/space/solar-system (THIS IS BRILLIANT!)

Decided where you’re going?  OK – now we’re into the serious stuff.  In the time you have left this class – how long is it going to take to get to the planet? What is the absolute MINIMUM amount of kit you’re going to need? How will you provide food and water for the journey? Can you find out how NASA do it?
