TRAPANI

WHERE IS TRAPANI? Trapani province which occupies the eastern part of Sicily, is highly differentiated now long stretches of coast embellished by broad sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, marshy areas, lagoons, salt pans, river deltas; now an uninterrupted succession of islands, inlets, rocks.

SALT-PANS Over the centuries the salt- pans and the salt industry have created a unique environment of great culture, economic relevance in a region where the land merges into the sea. This route is called la Via del Sale (the salt road).

THE MILLS

EGADI ISLANDS The Egadi islands are Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo. They are easily seen from the town, the salt-pans at Nubia, the isle of Mozia, the top of Erice as well as from Marsala and all the coast from Trapani.

FAVIGNANA Mount Santa Caterina dominates the island of Favignana, where every year in May the old tradition of tuna fishing is revived. The visitor is impressed by the majestic Tonnara Florio, a fine example of old industrial building, an by the elegance Palazzo Florio.

“MATTANZE”

LEVANZO Levanzo famous for its numerous archaeological objects found in the deep sea. This island has been inhabited since very ancient times, as is shown by the neolithical paintings of 5000 years ago found in the Genovese cave.

MARETTIMO Marettimo the remotes and wildest of the three, with its marvellous caves and mountainous paths. It is a small island, which gives the visitor the opportunity of living in symbiosis with nature.

PANTELLERIA The Island of Pantelleria, famous for the growing of capers an zibibbo grapes, as well as for the making of muscate wine, is an important tourist attraction. The volcanic lake called Specchio di Venere, the countless natural springs inside the caves.

ERICE

THE HISTORY AND MYTH Erice was inhabited by the Elymians, who erected a temple dedicated to the worship of the godness of fecundity and love. Successive invaders used this building to adore their own divinities: Tanit- Astarte for the Phoenicians, Aphrodtite for the Romans.

SEGESTA Following the slope of Mount Erice and tracks of the ancient Elymian people one arrives in Segesta, surrounded by a range of gently sloping hills which enclose two precious jewels, the Temple and Theatre. The 5th-century Siculian-Doric temple stands imposingly on a hillock in the middle of a picturesque valley.

THE GREEK THEATRE The greek theatre, called in the rock and dated to the 2nd century BC, overlooks the valley from the top of Mount Barbaro. In the spectacular natural view provided by the steep slope over the valley of Segesta, every two years theatrical performances are staged during the festival for evoking an atmosphere of older times

MOZIA

TOPHET Mozia became a strategic site owing to its vicinity to powerful Carthage. Its foundation dates revealed thanks to Giuseppe Whitaker. One the most evocative places is the Tophet, a series of carved stone stelae where sacrificies were offered to Tanit, the godness of Life and Death, Fecundity and the sea. The Tophet was linked to the coast through a road that has been submerged by sea but is still visible from above.
