Hershey’s Kisses Addition Facts Project by Mrs. Peterson’s 1st grade students at Nipomo Elementary School Nipomo, CA
After a reading of the Hershey Kisses Addition book the students were given Hershey kisses and hugs to use for finding combinations for making the sums of 3 to 10. Here is a display of all the ways they found to make the sum of 5.
Students shared their combinations which were entered on a big chart. As they worked the students noticed a pattern in the number of different combinations and were able to make correct predictions about how many combinations for the next sum.
After completing the chart the students gathered around the computer and helped the teacher put in the data about the number of combinations for the different sums. A graph was made with that data which showed that for each subsequent sum the number of combinations increased by one more.
The students finally got to eat their hugs and kisses while they played the Hershey Kisses counting game where they had to figure out how many more were needed to make 5--an enjoyable application of what they had learned. The students all agreed that this was a fun and yummy way to learn about addition.
