Modern Language Association Documented Essay Format as provided by Purdue University’s and Capital Community College’s “A Guide for Writing Research Papers Based on Modern Language Association (MLA) Documentation”

Paper Format (paraphrased from Purdue University’s OWL and Capital Community College’s “A Guide”) Paper:8 ½” x 11” white paper. Margins: 1” all around Spacing: double-spaced throughout Heading and Title: (On the top left margin) Student’s Name Instructor’s Name Course Name Date (04 November 2003) (Centered) Title ( plain text, unless the title of a longer work is part of your title )

Pagination (paraphrased from Capital Community College’s “A Guide”) (On the top right margin) Including the first page, pages should be numbered consecutively following the student’s last name and a space. (You may use the header option in your word processor for automatic pagination.) Catahay 1

Quotations (paraphrased from Purdue University’s OWL and Capital Community College’s “A Guide”) If a quotation is fewer than four lines on your paper, the quoted information should be placed in quotation marks in your text. Place periods and commas within quotation marks. Question marks, exclamation marks, semicolons, and colons should be placed depending on the context of the sentence. When quoting lines of poetry, the slash ( / ) with a space on both its sides indicates a line break. If a quotation is longer than four typed lines on your paper, begin your quote on a new line, indented 1 inch from the margin. Leave out quotation marks and place the end punctuation before the citation.

Documentation (paraphrased from Purdue University’s OWL and Capital Community College’s “A Guide”) Parenthetical Citations immediately follow quotations and paraphrased information. Parenthetical citations include the author's name (or the title of the work) and the page (or paragraph) number of the work. Periods are placed after parenthetical citations. Example: (Angelou 58). All cited information must be listed on the Works Cited page

Parenthetical Citations (Examples are quoted from Purdue University’s OWL) Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (263). Romantic poetry is characterized by the "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (Wordsworth 263). Wordsworth extensively explored the role of emotion in the creative process (263). An anonymous Wordsworth critic once argued that his poems were too emotional ("Wordsworth Is A Loser," 100).

Work(s) Cited Page (paraphrased from Purdue University’s OWL and Capital Community College’s “A Guide”) This page is separate from the essay’s body. “Works Cited” should be centered in plain text at the top of the list; everything else is aligned at the left margin of the page. (If only one source is listed, write “Work Cited” instead. Entries must be in alphabetical order and double- spaced. The first line of each reference should be flush left. All lines after should be ½” indented. (You may use the hanging indent option in your word processor.)
