A. Recycling in the Biosphere 1. Matter is recycled between and within ecosystems. Physical substance/has mass and volume

A. Recycling in the Biosphere 2. Biogeochemical Cycles- Process by which elements, chemical compounds, and other forms of matter are passed from one organism to another, and from one part of the biosphere to another.

B. The Water Cycle 1. Water moves between ocean, atmosphere and land. 2. H2O molecules enter the atmosphere as water vapor (gas) when they evaporate from the ocean or other bodies of water. Evaporation- Water changes from liquid to gas. 3. Water can evaporate from the leaves of plants also, a process called transpiration.

C. Nutrient Cycles 1. Nutrients- chemical substances an organism needs to stay alive. 2. Every living organism needs nutrients to carry out life functions.

C. Nutrient Cycles 3. The Carbon Cycle The carbon cycle moves carbon from the atmosphere, through the food web, and returns to the atmosphere. Carbon is emitted by the burning of fossil fuels. Some carbon is stored for long periods of time in areas called carbon sinks.

C. Nutrient Cycles 4. The Nitrogen Cycle The nitrogen cycle mostly takes place underground. Some bacteria convert gaseous nitrogen into ammonia through a process called nitrogen fixation. Some nitrogen-fixing bacteria live in nodules on the roots of plants; others live freely in the soil.

C. Nutrient Cycles 4. The Nitrogen Cycle Nitrifying bacteria change the ammonium into nitrate. Nitrogen moves through the food web and returns to the soil during decomposition.

C. Nutrient Cycles 5. The Phosphorus Cycle The phosphorus cycle takes place at and below ground level. Phosphate is released by the weathering of rocks. Phosphorus moves through the food web and returns to the soil during decomposition.

C. Nutrient Cycles 5. The Phosphorous Cycle Phosphorus leaches into groundwater from the soil and is locked in sediments. Both mining and agriculture add phosphorus into the environment.

D. Nutrient Limitation 6. Limiting Nutrient- substance that is scarce or cycles slowly. (This is why fertilizer is used! Contains Nitrogen, Phosphate, Potassium to boost production!)
