Helium or Helon? When Helium was first discovered it was named after the sun using the Greek word Helios. It was given the ending “ium” which is characteristic of metals, because it was first believed to be an Alkaline Earth Metal. Later people tried to rename it, but alas to late the name Helium stuck.

Lesson 4

METALS vs. Non- METALS

Molecular compounds Atoms held together by covalent bonds. Involves nonmetals. CF 4 Carbon Tetrafluoride

Molecule Uncharged group of two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds.

Covalent Bonds Involves nonmetals. Chemical bond formed between two atoms by sharing a pair of electrons.

Covalent Cont. Liquid or gas at room temperature due to weaker interparticle forces between molecules. Not soluble in water. Interparticle forces- force between particles that make up a substance.

Naming Molecular Compounds Use prefix to name the number of atoms present.

Prefixes Mono - 1 Di -2 Tri - 3

Cont. Tetra – 4 Penta – 5 Hexa - 6

Cont. Hepta – 7 Octa - 8

Cont. Nona – 9 Deca - 10
