Image of the Black Death Examine the picture, then answer these questions in your book. How does this picture portray the Black Death ? Is it accurate ? How is it useful to us in studying the disease? The title is Triumph of Death – what did the artist mean?

The Black Death – causes, cures and effects

Objectives : * To examine the reasons that Medieval people thought caused the Black Death. * To understand how they tried to cure the disease. * To examine the short & long term effects of the Black Death in England.

What caused the plague ? People in medieval times had very little scientific understanding, and did not know the true cause of the disease. They came up with a range of ‘reasons’ why this pestilence had come amongst them….many of these ideas will appear silly to us in the 21 st century.

What caused the plague ? Task : Produce a spider diagram to explain the various reasons for the Black Death that people in the Middle Ages believed. Write a sentence or two to explain each reason.

How did they treat the Black Death ? Without any of our modern medical knowledge, it was difficult to provide effective care for victims of the disease. Task : Use the information provided to list the different methods used, writing a sentence or two for each one. You could include a sketch too !

What were the effects of the Black Death ? How might the Black Death change how people lived and worked in medieval England? What changes are mentioned in the King Death clip last lesson? What were the short term effects on towns, villages & the population of England ?

Long term effects What were the short term effects on towns, villages & the population of England ? What were the long term effects on : Wages and prices Land Labour services Attitudes Standard of living Consider this : Was the Black Death really a disaster for everyone in England ?
