Now, answer the following questions.

Were those guys Feynman had gotten in with when he was thirteen the same age as he was? No, they were a little older than he was.

Was Feynman interested in asking Barbara out on a date? Yes, he was interested in asking Barbara out on a date.

What advice did his mother give him on what he should do when dating? His mother gave him all kinds of advice on the date. For example, if they took the bus, he was supposed to get off the bus first, and offer Barbara his hand. Or if they had to walk on the street, he was supposed to walk on the outside. She even told him what kinds of things to say.

Reading

When I was a young fellow about thirteen, I had somehow gotten in with a group of guys who were a little older than I was, and more sophisticated. 關係代名詞 who 引導形容詞子句，修飾 a group of guys 。 sophisticated: experienced 本句的主要子句以過去完成式 had gotten 表 示「回想過去所發生的事」。

They knew a lot of different girls, and would go out with them— often to the beach. a lot of different girls = many different girls would 表示當時的意願

One time when we were at the beach, most of the guys had gone out on some jetty with the girls. one time = once 有一次 some = a certain 某一 There must be some reason for the accident. 本句時態表示時間的副詞子句用過去式 (were) ，而表示動作較早發生用過去完成式 (had gone out) 。

I was interested in a particular girl a little bit, and sort of thought out loud: “Gee, I think I’d like to take Barbara to the movies....” sb + be interested in + sb/sth 對 … 有興趣 I am interested in English. a little bit: somewhat (adv.) Your idea seems a little bit stupid. sort of: rather, somewhat, kind of (adv.) I sort of like country music. think out loud = think aloud

That was all I had to say, and the guy next to me got all excited. 此處的 had to say ， 並非表示「必須說」， 而是 had (something) to say 。 the guy next to me = the guy who was next to me got: became Mother got angry when she saw the room in a mess. all excited 中的 all 在形容詞前表示強調。

He ran out onto the rocks and found her. onto 指「由下方跳上去」。 The cat ran onto the table.

He pushed her back, all the while saying in a loud voice, “Feynman has something he wants to say to you, Barbara!” all the while (conj.) 用來指「一件事情發生在另一件事情自始至終 的時間內」 She went to college at her small town, and lived at home all the while. in a loud voice = loudly ( ←→ in a low voice)

Or if we had to walk on the street, I was supposed to walk on the outside. She even told me what kinds of things to say. be supposed to = should
