CTAP 295 Teaching With Technology Resume Writing Linda Prince West Valley High School June 29, 2001 Final Presentation

CTAP 295 Teaching With Technology 2 Introduction vI am a Business Teacher at West Valley High School in Cottonwood. v address: vWeb site: This lesson is designed to be used in an ROP Computer Technology class made up of juniors and seniors. As part of an employment unit, students will research resume styles, identify their own skills and abilities, and write a resume that can be used for a job search or a resume contest held in the spring.

CTAP 295 Teaching With Technology 3 Teacher Expectations vCreate a lesson to be used in my class vLearn how to use a program to design a web site vPost the lesson on the web site vUse PowerPoint to make a presentation vWork hard to get all require- ments finished in three weeks. vMeet and work with a variety of people

CTAP 295 Teaching With Technology 4 Teacher Outcome vIdentified teaching standards to be addressed in lesson and designed a rubric for grading culminating project vCreated web page in Netscape Composer 4Linked pages, web site addresses, 4Added tables, charts, graphics 4Downloaded and uploaded web page file vUsed Excel to create a grade spreadsheet 4Created pivot table 4Copied and pasted charts into web page

CTAP 295 Teaching With Technology 5 Student Success vInterested in a project about themselves and a desire to discover their skills and abilities vExcitement about preparing a document that will be used to obtain a job vUse of Microsoft Word to prepare documents.

CTAP 295 Teaching With Technology 6 Student Success Continued vPride in their final draft vExcitement about entering their resume in EDD resume contest.

CTAP 295 Teaching With Technology 7 Shortcomings For Students vResumes have been prepared before for other classes, so a few students were not eager to redo their resume. vThey didn’t like researching different types of resumes on the Internet. vSome students found it difficult to assess their skills and abilities with no job experience. vFrustration with having to do many drafts before final printout.

CTAP 295 Teaching With Technology 8 The resume was the culminating activity. It was worth 64 points; and as you can see from the following table, a majority of the students were very successful.

CTAP 295 Teaching With Technology 9 The above table is a comparison of male/female results. It shows that their scores were very close. The females did slightly better.

CTAP 295 Teaching With Technology 10 This charts shows that students were able to score higher on their post- test due to the research and activities performed in this lesson.

CTAP 295 Teaching With Technology 11 Teacher Revisions The rubric was too lengthy. It was a little difficult to grade resumes using this rubric, so I will be editing this rubric to make it easier to use. I currently have too many criteria rows on the rubric so some may have to be eliminated or consolidated with other criteria.

CTAP 295 Teaching With Technology 12 Lesson Revisions

CTAP 295 Teaching With Technology 13 Conclusion vI have learned a lot in this class. At first I was a little overwhelmed at how I was going to get this done in three weeks but it all came together. vEvery year I do teach how to write a resume, but I am glad that I have a web site on this important subject. By having the students do research on the Internet and find examples of resumes, they have a better idea of what is expected of them. vHaving made the rubric is also a great help in that students know exactly what I will be looking for when I grade their resumes.

CTAP 295 Teaching With Technology 14 vI am really glad I took this class. vThe students did a great job on their resumes and were really excited about the resume contest. Some students asked me every day if I had gotten back the results. I’m finished!
