French Nouns and Gender Nouns in French (like Latin, Italian, Spanish, and even German) have gender. They are either masculine or feminine. This does not mean that the nouns have male or female parts. It is simply a way of categorizing nouns. There is no reliable rule for determining a noun’s gender other than memorizing that word’s gender.

French Nouns and Gender We can tell a noun’s gender by the definite or indefinite article it takes. Definite article “the” is le (masculine) or la (feminine); les in plural; le/la become l’ when its noun begins with a vowel Indefinite article “a”/ “an” is un (m) or une (f); des in plural
