 1920 ELECTION, REPUBLICANS CHOSE OHIO SENATOR WARREN G. HARDING AS THEIR CANDIDATE AND CALVIN COOLIDGE AS HIS VICE PRES. CANDIDATE  DEMOCRATS CHOSE JAMES M. COX AS PRES. AND FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT AS THE VICE PRES.  HARDING WON WITH 60% OF THE VOTE  BUT MANY VOTED FOR THE SOCIALIST CANDIDATE = EUGENE V. DEBS  DEBS RAN FOR PRES. FROM PRISON BECAUSE HE VIOLATED THE ESPIONAGE ACT

 AFTER WINNING THE PRESIDENCY  MADE SOME GREAT APPOINTMENTS IN KEY POSITIONS  CHARLES EVANS HUGHES AS SEC. OF STATE  HERBERT HOOVER AS SEC. OF COMMERCE  ANDREW MELLON AS SEC. OF TREASURY

 THE ECONOMY CLIMBED OUT OF THE RECESSION AND STARTED TO DO VERY WELL  HOWEVER, NOT ALL HIS APPOINTMENTS WERE GOOD

 THE OHIO GANG  WAS THE NICKNAME OF THE FRIENDS HE APPOINTED TO HIS CABINET AND OTHER GOV’T POSTS  CHARLES FORBES WAS ARRESTED FOR TAKING BRIBES AND SPENT 2 YRS. IN PRISON  ALBERT FALL HAD ILLEGALLY RENTED 2 NAVAL OIL RESERVES TO OIL COMPANIES ▪ FALL RECEIVED IN RETURN $, LOANS, AND CATTLE ▪ ONE RESERVE WAS LOCATED IN TEAPOT DOME, WYOMING ▪ WAS CALLED THE TEAPOT DOME SCANDAL ▪ GOT A YEAR IN PRISON AND FINED $100,000

 4 OTHER MEMBERS OF HIS ADMINISTRATION RESIGNED DUE TO CORRUPTION CHARGES  HE WAS NEVER TIED TO THESE CHARGES HIS FRIENDS RECEIVED  HE DIED SUDDENLY ON AUG. 2, 1923  THESE SCANDALS HURT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY

 TOOK OVER AFTER HARDING DIED  WAS NOT INVOLVED IN THE SCANDALS  HELPED REGAIN THE TRUST OF THE AMERICANS  AS SOON AS HE BECAME PRESIDENT, HE FIRED ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HAD BEEN INVOLVED IN THE SCANDALS  COOLIDGE EASILY WON THE ELECTION OF 1924

 PROMISED CONTINUED ECONOMIC PROSPERITY  HE ENJOYED A PERFECT ECONOMIC CLIMATE WHILE PRESIDENT

 MANY AMERICANS FAVORED ISOLATIONISM  THE REPUBLICANS COMPROMISED AND PROMOTED PEACE AND ECONOMIC GROWTH THROUGHOUT EUROPE  ALLIES FROM THE WAR STILL OWED THE US BILLIONS SO A GOOD WORLD ECONOMY WOULD EQUAL LOANS PAID BACK

 DISARMAMENT  MOST NATIONS FAVORED GETTING RID OF WEAPONS THAT COULD BE USED FOR WAR  WASHINGTON CONFERENCE  NOV U.S. INVITED THE MAJOR COUNTRIES TO DISCUSS NAVAL DISARMAMENT  FIVE-POWER NAVAL TREATY  LIMITED THE MAXIMUM SIZE OF EACH COUNTRY’S NAVY  GAVE BRITAIN & THE U.S. THE LARGEST NAVIES  FRANCE, ITALY, & JAPAN WERE RESTRICTED TO SMALLER NAVIES

 KELLOGG-BRIAND PACT  U.S. AND 14 OTHER NATIONS SIGNED THIS IN AUG OF 1928  TRIED TO OUTLAW WAR

 DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE WAS ALFRED E. SMITH  REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE WAS HERBERT HOOVER  HOOVER’S CAMPAIGN SLOGAN WAS “A CHICKEN FOR EVERY POT AND A CAR IN EVERY GARAGE”  HOOVER WON EASILY
