THE CELL
CELL THEORY All living organisms are made up of cells. .
CELL THEORY Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in an organism. Cells control birth, growth, development, reproduction and death. All life functions begin as a cellular process.
CELL THEORY Organisms can be unicellular (one-celled) or multicellular (many-celled) Cells contain organelles ( some with membranes), which are small structures inside that do different jobs. All cells come from other cells.
Cells can be classified into 2 groups. Eukaryotic Cells Prokaryotic Cells

Animal Cell Plant Cell
Animal Cell Plant Cell Have students outline the organelle first. Then if they have time they can go back and color in later if they don’t have time to color in while we are working. Nucleus: Is the “brain” of the cell. It controls cells’ functions and it contains DNA.
Cell membrane (plasma membrane) : Allows for certain things to enter and exit the cell. It maintains cell’s homeostasis.
Ribosomes: Make proteins for the cells
Mitochondria: “power house of the cell”, this is where cells receive their energy.
Cell Wall: Supports and protects plant cells.
Chloroplast : Where plants absorb sunlight, and make food (carbohydrates).
Let’s look at some actual plant and animal cells!
