They describe the motion of objects in terms of  their MASS and  the FORCES acting on them Mass – the amount of matter that an object contains a measure.
ForcesForces. What is a force? A force is a push or a pull. Like velocity and acceleration, a force is described by it’s strength and by the direction.

Forces and Motion. Force A Force is a push or pull on an object. Forces have a direction. Forces have a strength (magnitude) and are measured in Newtons.
Force and Motion Acceleration Change in speed and/or direction of an object’s motion.
How do Forces Affect Motion?
 Bell Ringer: What do you think causes an object to start moving, stop moving, or change direction? What do you think causes an object to start moving,
Force: push or pull  all forces have size and direction  measured in Newtons (N) An object will speed up, slow down, or turn Only if something is pushing.

Net Force Balanced Force Unbalanced Force Forces Foldable Net Force Balanced Force Unbalanced Force

Net Force Definition: The net force is the overall force acting on an object All of the forces added together

All forces combine!

All forces combine!

Unbalanced Force Definition: Can cause an object to start moving, stop moving or change direction Will change the objects motion Will cause the object to accelerate in the direction of the greater force

The object will move in the direction of the greater force

The object will move in the direction of the greater force

Balanced Force Definition: Equal forces acting in opposite directions Will NOT change the objects motion

The object will not move because the forces are balanced The overall force = ZERO

Both forces are balanced…the object will not move

Class Discussion Look at the next few slide images and identify the forces that apply to each action.
