European Network of Freshwater Research Organisations Introducing EurAqua Presenter’s name

Mission statement The aim of EurAqua is to contribute substantially to the development of European freshwater science and technology and its dissemination on a European scale, thus having a significant input on the development of the scientific and economic basis of European water management.

Membership The EurAqua Partner institutions are leading, generally public, freshwater research institutions in the EU Member States and the European Economic Area. They tend to Be key advisors to ‘water management’ ministries and other regional water authorities Have an international profile Link to water management industry Within the country, the EurAqua members are closely connected to other relevant institutions. Management board meeting in Warsaw, 2011

Brief history, foundation and development The original foundation of EurAqua dates back to 1993 when members from six countries (Fr, UK, NL, Dk, IRL, I), began to work informally together. After the first formal Board Meeting on 29 November 1993, the membership was extended to all 12 EU countries with the exception of Luxemburg and Portugal. In 1994 EurAqua had ten members. In 1995 at the fourth Board meeting the European Economic Area (EEA) countries, Austria, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland joined EurAqua as new Members. Portugal joined in In 1999 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the 16 countries. In April 2002 the decision was taken to invite other MS to join. Many countries joined in the subsequent years. During the cause of years member institutes changed.

European coverage

Partnering with other networks Formalized: MOU Partnership for European Environmental Research (PEER) Water Supply and Sanitation Technology Platform Observership Common Implementation Strategy for the WFD Soon: Rhine Commission Helcom MenBo JPI Water Challenges (Stakeholder Advisory Group) Personal connections, a.o.: CIS, ECTP, EUREAU, EWP, Sednet, WMO…. The intention is to step-up on inter-network collaborations.

Applied scientific profile (2008) (2008!) 23 Countries > employees > 4500 researchers

Objectives 1.“Science Collaboration" - further strengthen the collaboration and integration of research resources and to facilitate efficient transfer of knowledge between scientific institutions and between researchers. 2.“Science Policy Collaboration" - EurAqua takes action to collaborate and exchange research results with public and private end-users, thus aiming to bridge the science-policy and the innovation gaps. 3.“Research needs identification and validation" - EurAqua actively and continuously works on identifying and validating research needs required to implement today's policy and future emerging challenges. 4.“Efficiency and strength of EurAqua" - EurAqua actively pursues information flow between its partners as to increase efficiency. EurAqua also liaises with other networks to collaborate whenever possible, further enhancing efficiency and effectiveness.

Position papers / consultations Position paper on the specific programme of Horizon2020 Position paper on the outline of the European Innovation Partnership on Water Position on the need of a network of hydrological observatories (Responding to: Possible topics for future activities for integrating and opening national research infrastructures) Input to work programme’s in FP7 Joint input to the EC on priority issues for the Horizon2020 work programme on Societal Challenge 5: Climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials EurAqua frequently discusses with EC officers on developments. EurAqua invites the EC to Management Board meetings.

Other activities Promotion of staff exchange Information exchange on national affairs Knowledge exchange and capacity building on understanding EC research instruments The management board meetings, where science managers / science directors meet, is considered to be a very valuable informal exchange forum between the different institutes

Conferences EurAqua driven: EurAqua Conference 2008: How can climate change be incorporated in river basin management plans under the WFD? EurAqua Symposium "Impact of climate change on water resources — 200 Years hydrology in Europe — a European perspective in a changing world“ (2010) Innovative approaches for the management of environmental risks from plant protection products. A joint EurAqua-PEER Scientific Conference - Montpellier, France, October 26th-28th 2010

Governance and funding MBM meetings: The management board meetings are the main events where generally speaking senior knowledge managers or science directors exchange information and discuss activities. The meetings are hosted by a EurAqua member, The meetings are twice a year. Core group: A Core group of members is in charge of preparing the meeting. The chair and secretariat are provided free of charge by one member. At the moment the chair is held by Deltares.
