Presentation transcript:

Starter Write the formulae for the following: a) Oxygenb) Methane c) Chlorined) Calcium chloride e) Neonf) Lithium oxide

Aim of lesson: To investigate the conductivity of different elements.

Conduction of Elements Aim: To investigate which elements conduct electricity.

Method Wires 3v DC Bulb Electrodes Beaker containing compound

Results: Element Metal/ Non-metal Conductor/ insulator Copper foil Iron Sulphur Magnesium Silicon Oxygen Aluminium Tin Lead Iodine Carbon(graphite)

Conclusion: All metals conduct Non-metals do not conduct (except carbon in the form of graphite)

Metals Found on the LHS of the Periodic Table. Metals conduct when they are solid or liquid.

Metallic bonding Exists between metal elements only. Metals conduct due to the ‘sea of delocalised electrons’ which move around the outside of the atoms and so carry the current.
