GEOG 346: Day 16 Urban Agriculture

Housekeeping Items O Field trip assignments due today. O We have a special guest today – Stephen from Nanaimo Foodshare, who will discuss the various program the organization has relating to urban agriculture here in Nanaimo. Within my somewhat limited experience, I can say that it is one of most advanced groups of its kind in Canada.

Urban Agriculture and Agricultural Urbanism O I hope you read the excerpt from LeSalle and Holland. There are a number of issues relating to urban agriculture, many of which Stephen addressed: Food security (including greater regional self— sufficiency); Access to safe, healthy food (problem of “food deserts” and lack of control over what is on the shelf of food stores); Maintaining the viability of farming and farmers and preserving farmland from conflicting land uses.
