John Amos Comenius Jan Amos Komenský biography

John Amos Comenius was a Czech philosopher, politician, scientist, teacher, educator, and writer. He was a Unity of the Brethren/Moravian Protestant bishop, a religious refugee and one of the earliest champions of universal education. Comenius became known as the teacher of nations. He is often considered the father of modern education. Bishop->biskup Refugee->emigrant Unity of the Brethren/Moravian->Jednota Bratrská

The birthplace of Comenius is not known(1592 in Komňa,Nivnice or Uherský Brod). His ancestors came from Hungary and his original family name was Szeges. He attended the Latinschool in Přerov and continued his studies in Herborn and Heidelberg. Comenius became a pastor at age 24 and left the Brethren into exile. He lived and worked in many different countries in Europe, including Sweden, Polish, Transylvania, the Holy Roman Empire, England, the Netherlands, and Royal Hungary. He died in 1670 in Amsterdam.

In 1628 Comenius left Czech lands for Lešno (Poland), where he wrote his educational works („Velká Didaktika“). In Lešno he was accused of corrupting children and covering up christian wisdom with pagan science.* In he lived in England, where he had been invited by English revolituon parliament. During the years , J. A. K. took part in peace talks.(There was still 30-years war.) He left to Amsterdam where he lived for the next 14 years and where he published „Opera didactica omnia“. He was trying to prepare for the great task of rebuilding the land and the society of Czech lands, which were devastated by war, and he knew that education would play a vital part in it. *kažení dětí a zatemňování křesťanské moudrosti pohanským věděním.

He was interested in „pansofia“, which is scence about all phenomena in the world. His ideas were very close to the teachings the English philosopher, Francis Bacon. Thanks to his pansofic works, he was invited to London in the year 1641 by his followers(Comenians). A lot of prestigious people were interested in his work and services. For example french cardinal Richelieu, princely ancestry of Rákocz´s and even Americans.Comenius chose Sweden. Comenius supposed that the Swedish could help the Czech nation to get independent again.During the conference with Queen Kristina in Stockholm he was assured, that Swedish would not forget about the defeated Czech nation, but during the Vestfal Peace Talks, the influence of the Habsburgs´s on to the Czech nation was admitted.

During the 19th century Czech National Revival, Comenius became idealised as a symbol of the Czech nation. 28 March, the birthday of Comenius, is celebrated as Teachers' Day in Slovakia and in the Czech Republic. A lot of schools was named after him.For example the Comenius University was founded in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, a primary school in Skopje… -pansofia -Ludvík 14.
