Student-Athlete Responsibilities for OFFICIAL & UNOFFICAL VISITS What you need to know about Prospective Student-Athletes

Overview: Two Types of Visits UNOFFICIAL VISIT Meals, lodging, transportation not paid for Only to last one day Unlimited in number Prospect can be of any age Limit of three complimentary admissions to one home contest OFFICIAL VISIT Meals, lodging, transportation provided by department Can last up to 48 hours Limit of one per prospect Prospect must be inside of their high school senior year Limit of three complimentary admissions to one home contest

Prospective Student Athlete Campus Visitation Policy For ANY and ALL Visits… Visits are not to be used for purely entertaining the prospect. Visits are not to show the prospect an experience outside that of “normal student life.” A prospect should not face any undue pressure from coaches, staff, or student-athletes to participate in activities that do not conform to this policy. A prospect MUST attend an academic meeting while on an OFFICIAL visit and is encouraged to do so on an UNOFFICIAL visit.

Prospective Student Athlete Campus Visitation Policy For ANY and ALL Visits… A prospect may engage in recreational or workout activities during a visit as long as the activity is voluntary, and not organized by the coaching staff. A coach is prohibited from being present during recreational activities or physical workouts involving prospects on a visit. Personalized recruiting jerseys, audio/video scoreboard presentations, and game-day simulations are prohibited. LETS TALK ABOUT “CELEBRATIZING”

Prospective Student Athlete Campus Visitation Policy UNOFFICIAL VISITS UNOFFICIAL VISIT: One made at the prospect’s own expense Any expenses or entertainment provided by the department will make the visit OFFICIAL except for: Complimentary admissions to an on-campus athletic event in which Oakland University competes (limit of 3) Transportation to view an off-campus practice site, home competition or competition site, or other institutional facilities.

Prospective Student Athlete Campus Visitation Policy UNOFFICIAL VISITS Oakland University shall limit an unofficial visit to ONE DAY. There will be no arrangement or payment of housing and no paid meals. A student-host may be provided for an unofficial visit. The student-host may not be provided any money, meals, or other incentives to help out. There is no limit on the number of unofficial visits a prospect may make to campus.

Prospective Student Athlete Campus Visitation Policy OFFICIAL VISITS OFFICIAL VISIT: Financed in whole, or in part, by the institution. The institution may provide for transportation, lodging, meals and limited forms of entertainment. Only the prospect, his/her parent or legal guardian(s), spouse, or children may receive meals and/or lodging during the official visits. (i.e. sister, aunt, friend, etc. must pay their own expenses.)

Prospective Student Athlete Campus Visitation Policy OFFICIAL VISITS When/How Many Official Visits Can a Prospect Make? Official Visits may not occur until the prospect begins their senior year in high school. A prospect may only take one official visit to Oakland University (even if they are a multi-sport athlete). A high school senior is limited to 5 official visits total. Official visits may not exceed 48 hours. (arrive on campus – leave campus)

Prospective Student Athlete Campus Visitation Policy OFFICIAL VISITS MEALS The institution may provide up to three meals per day for the prospect, his/her parent(s), legal guardian(s), spouse, or children. It is required that the prospect visit a campus dining facility for a meal and/or snack while on their visit. (Vandenberg Cafeteria, the OC) A prospect (and those accompanying) can not be provided cash in lieu of any meal or other expense.

Prospective Student Athlete Campus Visitation Policy OFFICIAL VISITS MEALS ONE TIME over the course of the prospect’s official visit, the STUDENT- HOST may receive a complimentary meal as long as the COACHING STAFF IS PRESENT. (Not more than one-student athlete per prospect is allowed this complimentary meal.)

Prospective Student Athlete Campus Visitation Policy OFFICIAL VISITS HOSTS and HOST MONEY Student-athletes must be in their second year of collegiate enrollment to serve as hosts. Only one student-host per day can be designated to a prospect. A student-host will be issued $30 for each day of a prospect’s official visit. If a student-host is in charge of two prospects, they will be allowed $45 for each day they are in charge of the two guests. The host money is to be spent on reasonable entertainment, snacks, and any meal w/out a coach.

Prospective Student Athlete Campus Visitation Policy OFFICIAL VISITS Student-Host FAQs Q: Can I buy the prospect an OU shirt with my host money? A: NO. The host money is not to be used to purchase any tangible item for the prospect. Q: Does the one meal I receive while my coach is present come out of my host money? A: The first meal with your coach and the prospect can be received above and beyond your host money. Any additional meal you want to have out, you must dip in to your host allottment.

Prospective Student Athlete Campus Visitation Policy OFFICIAL VISITS Student-Host FAQs Q: Can I receive extra funds from my coach if he/she is unable to make a meal and/or may I be reimbursed for meals with a prospect? A: NO. If a coach is not present, you must use the host money. Q: Can I receive a complimentary admission to an event while acting as a student-host? A: YES. A prospect is allowed 3 complimentary admissions, one of which can be used by their student-host. (Follow the appropriate process)

Prospective Student Athlete Campus Visitation Policy OFFICIAL VISITS Student-Host FAQs Q: Can I drive the prospect in my own car? A: YES. However, you must stay within a 30-mile radius of the institution’s campus. You may not take/entertain a prospect in Canada. Q: Can a coach or staff member provide me with or arrange a vehicle for me while I am a host? A: NO. Q: Can I let the prospect use my car while visiting? A: NO.

Prospective Student Athlete Campus Visitation Policy OTHER IMPORTANT ITEMS “Representatives of Athletics Interests:” Boosters Alumni Parents Individuals of Sponsoring Agencies A student-athlete or coach cannot allow conversations to occur anywhere between a prospect and a representative of athletics interests. An exchange of a pleasant greeting is allowed, but afterward, the conversation must end.

OTHER IMPORTANT ITEMS Off-Campus Contacts: Off-campus, in person contacts that are unavoidable between enrolled student- athletes and prospective student-athletes are permissible (even at the prospect’s high school) as long as they do not occur at the direction of a coach. Telephone Contact: Student-athletes may accept calls from prospects EVEN BEFORE (new rule) July 1 following the prospect’s junior year in high school. Calls made by a student-athlete at the direction of a coach or financed by the department are not permissible. Written Correspondence: Student-athletes may write to prospects as long as it is not at the direction of a coach.

Prospective Student Athlete Campus Visitation Policy MISCONDUCT ISSUES For all visits involving prospects: The arrangement, provision and/or encouragement of the use of alcoholic beverages or illegal substances during a prospect’s visit to Oakland University is prohibited. In addition, all forms of gambling activities and the offer of sex for a prospect are prohibited. The use of inappropriate entertainment (i.e. strippers, gentlemen’s club) are prohibited. Any Oakland University employee, staff member, or student-athlete found to have violated this aspect of the Policy will face disciplinary action on the part of the university.

Prospective Student Athlete Campus Visitation Policy MISCONDUCT ISSUES For all visits involving prospects: As part of the Policy, the prospect is specifically prohibited from consuming alcohol or using illegal drugs for the entire duration of the visit. A prospect is prohibited from involvement with gambling activities. Furthermore, a student- athlete is prohibited from consuming alcohol in the presence of a prospect. It is the responsibility of a prospect, enrolled student- athlete, coach, staff member, or any other OU personnel to report any violations to the Athletic Director.

Prospective Student Athlete Campus Visitation Policy MISCONDUCT ISSUES For all visits involving prospects: Failure of any institutional representative or a prospective student-athlete to abide by this Policy, applicable NCAA rules, the Code of Conduct, federal, state, local laws/ordinances and other Oakland University policies will result in disciplinary action, and affect the subsequent recruitment of the prospect. An individual determined to have violated these policies will be sanctioned. Applicable sanctions will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Multiple or repeat offenses by the same individual will result in the application of more severe sanctions.
