Editing Process –Set up Decks, Monitors –Prepare Master Tape –Know operation of edit controller
Laying Control Track( To Insert Edit) Fast Forward and Rewind Tape ( even- up tension on the supply hub) Record signal from camera, a switcher, sync generator or another tape.
Why Black? Easiest signal to edit over.
VTR Set up - Check the following to properly set up VTR. –Skew –Tracking –Video Level
Skew Control –Adjusts the tension on the tape –Changes from machine to machine –Can only be seen while in playback –Seen on the screen as a hooking or pulling (usually in the top left hand corner of the picture)
flagwaving – Tension problem. A Pulling across the entire frame
Tracking –Adjusts the relationship between the head drum signal and the control track pulse to get a stable playback picture. –Matches the frequencies of both signals –Can only be seen while in playback –Changes from machine to machine.
Video Level Manual- In this mode you can control the voltage of the incoming signal in the record mode Automatic-an automatic gain control circuit assures that you have a correct signal.
Monitor Se-Up-Check the following to properly set up Monitor Color/burst level/saturation/chroma/color intensity Hue/tint/subcarrier phase Black level adjustment/brightness Contrast/adjusts how bright a picture is
To properly set up a monitor it must be on color bars
Types of Color Bars Full Field Bars Split Field Bars SMPTE Bars
Primary colors of Video Red Green Blue
Complementary Colors Yellow Cyan Magenta
Luminance. Measured level of brightness On color bars, the color with the highest level of brightness is on the left, and the color with the lowest level of brightness on the right. IRE Units measure the overall luminance level of the video signal as measured on waveform monitor. 100 Brightest 7.5 Darkest
Full Field Bars
Split Field Bars Contain I and Q signals at bottom of screen as well as white.
SMPTE Bars A sample of the primary colors containing Blue in the reverse order across the screen, and black reference levels in the lower right corner The Only way to objectively set up a color monitor
SMTE Color Bars
Blue Gun Only Ability of a monitor to turn off the red and green guns and only display the blue gun. Will only display as blue, the color bars that include blue. White, cyan, magenta and blue Will display as black the bars that do not include blue: yellow, green, red, and black
Setting up monitor with SMPTE Bars/ Blue only Brightness-Use the three black bars in the lower right corner. These bars range = or IRE from the setup level of 7.5 IRE ( Black level) The left bar is lower and the right is brighter. Adjust brightness until so that the right bar becomes slightly visible, while the other two remain indiscernible. Contras- Adjust the contrast and watch the white until it stops getting brighter or begins to bloom. Color and Hue- Adjust the color so that the colors of the far left and right blue bars match with those of the chroma set bars located directly below them. Adjust the tint so that the colors of the near left and right blue bars match with those of the chroma set bars located directly below them.
Setting up Monitor split field bars and blue filter Adjust color to minimum and then adjust brightness until black bar stops getting darker. Adjust contrast until the white bar stops getting brighter. Set the color control to the center or detent position and with a blue filter adjust Hue until bars 2 and 5 are the same brightness.
Setting up Monitor S;lit Field bars and no blue filter Same Color, contras and Brightness as without filter. Adjust Hue so that the second bar is lemon yellow and fifth bar is magenta.
Monitor set up no color bars Adjust color to minimum and input a video picture containing black. Adjust brightness until black area of the screen stops getting darker and then adjust the contrast to maximum. Set the color control to the center or detent position and input a video signal containing flesh tones. Adjust the hue for natural skin tones.
Monitor V.S Receiver A monitor is designed to show exactly what the electronic video signal looks like in picture form. A Receiver or television set is designed to show the best picture possible. It enhances the picture A monitor is hooked up with direct cables from the videotape recorder A Receiver uses modulated signals.
Steps to set up an edit Select edit mode- Insert or Assemble? Cue each machine to the desire frames Set your in and out points Preview- check audio and video levels Record edit- leave a tail on each edit ( Overlap recording) Check the edit
Common Functions of Edit Controllers Mark In/ Out _ When do you mark an out? Preview- lets you preview edit Return/ Jump- return to in point Record- performs edit Review- see edit made Trim- used to alter an in or out point without shuttling the tape Go-to- will transport your tape to a specific point. Last Edit- shows you in and out of last edit. Split Edit- will let you set different in for Audio than Video.
Leader should include Slate Color bars/ tone Countdown
