Equipment and Use: 1. Fire blanket: smother person on ground “Tuck” location – back door 2. Fire extinguisher: extinguish fires – front & back 3. Eye wash: rinse eyes – back center 4. Shower: clothing on fire/spilled chemical – back center 5. Hood: exhaust odorous fumes from chamber – back center

6. Glass deposit box: dispose of broken glass 7. Sand: extinguish small chemical or oil fires 8. Sinks: wash off or cool down 9. Goggles: wear it while handling glasses, solutions, fire, and chemicals – back window 10. Paper towel: absorb liquid – back window 11. Autoclave: heat up chemicals slowly – back door

II. Emergency Procedure 1. Fire drill/ bomb scare a. close off gas, electric, and water b. close windows c. take important objects d. exit as directed e. do not re-enter until teacher returns

2. Thermal burn (hot object or flame) a. wash with cold HOH (cool & clean) b. report to teacher c. cover with gauze d. ice and to nurse

3. Chemical burn (acid or base) a. neutralize:acid – use baking soda base – use vinegar b. wash with cold HOH c. report to teacher d. cover with gauze e. ice and to nurse

4. Cut (glass, plastic, sharp metals) a. wash with cold HOH b. report to teacher c. cover with gauze d. ice and to nurse 5. Eye (chemical, dust or smoke) a. wash eye for 15 minutes wide open b. tell the teacher c. to the nurse

6. Poison (identify poison) Tell teacher a. ingest – mouth b. absorb – skin c. inject – puncture d. inhale – into lung e. to nurse – poison control

7. Small fires (types of fires) a. paper/cloth – HOH, sand, CO 2, foam, dry chemical b. oil – sand, foam, dry chemical c. electrical – dry chemical, CO 2 d. chemical – dry chemical 8. Large fire a. pull alarm b. tell teacher c. exit d. explain to authorities

9. Spills a. HOH – use paper towels b. Acid/Base – neutralize and absorb c. oil – paper towel d. other – ask teacher as needed

III. Special & Dangerous Chemicals: 1. Silver Nitrate – skin becomes black. 2. Nitric acid – skin becomes yellow – burns 3. Phenolphthalein – gastric distress 4. Calcium – caustic on skin 5. Magnesium – flare (don’t look at it) 6. Kerosene – asthmatic reaction 7. Ammonia & bleach – toxic 8. Gases – suffocate & toxic

9. Allergen – person specific 10. Caustic – skin burns 11. Corrosive – metal reaction 12. Carcinogen – cancer reaction IV. Personal Safety 1. NO FOOD, DRINK or GUM in class 2. No ties or long jewelry 3. Goggles and/or apron on

4. Tie hair back 5. No horse play 6. Clean area and sink at the end of class V. Laboratory Safety 1. No equipment on edge (glass) 2. All hot objects on wire gauze 3. All equipment in proper place (test tube) 4. Label all containers

5. Experiments must be monitored at all times. 6. Do not mix chemicals. 7. Dispose of all chemicals properly. 8. Dispose all broken glass properly. 9. Follow All Instructions Carefully.
