St Joseph’s School PLPT Hygiene

Welcome Hi, We are the WAVE team from St Joseph’s School Pleasant Point and we are here to talk about the hygiene at our school.

Graph Year Soap Water Dryer Total Y8 Y7 Y6 Y2 Y4 ! ! ! ! ! !!!!!! !!!! ! ! ! 3/3 2/3 3/3 0/3 _ _ _ _ _ Key ! = They did it - = They didn’t it This graph shows the hygiene habits at our school.

Bad Hygiene Habits ! We monitored, noticed and had comments from other students that many of the students dried their hands with the special needs towel, not with the blow dryer. Some of the students don’t wash, dry or use soap. We also noticed that the main age group that didn’t fulfil the criteria were the year seven and eight students.

Survey Students Healthy Hand Washing 70% of the students said they washed their hands sometimes. 15% of the students said they washed their hands every time they went to the toilet. 15% of the students said they never wash their hands when they go to the toilet.

Hand Sanitizer The WAVE team discussed with Mrs Scott who is our WAVE Teacher and our school Principal about getting dispensers and Hand gel in every classroom. The money comes from the school, board of trustees and fundraising. Hand sanitizers doesn't replace washing your hands with warm water and soap. We are also working with the public Health Nurse about proper hygiene practices. Healthy Fundraising ideas include: Coin Dip

We are planning to have a fundraiser to raise money for the hand sanitizer dispensers. We will use four empty bins and each child will donate a gold coin with their name wrapped around it. WAVE members will pick out a coin from each bin. The winners will win a prize each.

Worm Farm We use effective hygiene practices by using gloves when we handle the worms. The WAVE team has a roster to look after the worms each week. The school supplies the gloves for the WAVE members.

Brain Storming with yr7 and 8’s Comments from year 7 and 8’s They would prefer to use a towel than a blow drier Like sensor dispenser Need a towel for each class room Get rid of the blow driers

Next Step We will resurvey the students at the end of this term and again at the beginning of term 3 to monitor student habits and compere from first hygiene survey. We need to discuss cost and process of new sensor dispensers and towel placement. We will discuss with about the dispensers with WAVE team, teachers and board of trusties.

Thank you for watching! We believe we are not the only school that has bad hygiene habits but through WAVE we can improve our health for the future.
