Kitchen Safety & Sanitation

Kitchen Safety Train yourself to be careful; Soon your carefulness will become a habit. Areas of safety: ~ Preventing Burns, Cuts, & More ~ Knife Safety ~ Preventing Fire ~ Electric Shock

Preventing Burns, Cuts, & More… Always use dry pot holders when handling hot pans & dishes. When putting dishes and pans in the oven, as well as removing them, pull out the racks. Keep handles of pans and skillets from extending over sides of stove or over another hot burner. To avoid a steam burn, lift up the edge of the cover farthest away from you.

Preventing Burns, Cuts, & More… Boiling Water (can cause severe burns) Place glass measuring cup on tray in case hot water breaks measuring cup. Do not wash hot dishes in cold water, they will crack or shatter.

Preventing Burns, Cuts, & More… Spills Wash & Dry hands thoroughly (wet hands slip & are unsafe with hot pans & electrical appliances). Wipe up spills immediately with paper towels. Walk, don’t run! Cuts If you break a glass, use a paper towel to pick up the pieces. Sweep up remaining pieces.

Knife Safety Always use a cutting board to protect the counter If it slides on counter while cutting, place a damp cloth underneath cutting board to prevent sliding. Select the correct knife for the job Cut food on cutting board and not your hand. Always use a sharp knife. Dull knives require more force, thus increasing the chance of cuts. Never place a knife in a sink of hot soapy water. Never try to catch a falling knife.

Preventing Fire Keep fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Be sure you know how to use it. Wear clothing that is not loose or drapes below your wrists. Keep hair tied back Avoid leaving the kitchen if you have food cooking or baking. Always turn the oven or stove top off when finished. Smother a grease fire with a tight – fitting lid, salt, or baking soda.

Electric Shock Never touch an appliance with wet hands, or submerge appliance in water. Avoid using any appliance with frayed or worn cords. Disconnect appliances by pulling out the plug, not by tugging on the cord. Be sure appliances are in the “off” position before plugging in. Never insert metal utensils in electrical appliances that are plugged in.
