Using Mouth Morphemes to Help Describe Clothing& & Accessories
What are Mouth Morphemes? Mouth Morphemes, also referred to as Non-manual Signals (NMS), are used to convey meaning of a sign. NMS refer in general to those aspects of ASL which do not involve the use of hands. NMS are extremely important in ASL.
What role do NMS play? 6 different roles: 1.Reflections of emotional states 2.Constructed action 3.Conversation regulators 4.Lexical 5.Grammatical markers 6.Modifiers (Adverbs)
Using Mouth Morphemes as Grammatical Markers/Lexical Mouth Morphemes: –“OO”: Small in size (Spaghetti straps) –“MM”: Medium/Average in size (Watch) –“CHA”: Large in size (Glasses)
