Working in partnership to make Dorset safer 11 Water Awareness Powerpoint 1

Working in partnership to make Dorset safer 2 Aim To train staff in water awareness.

Working in partnership to make Dorset safer 3 Objectives At the end of this session staff will be able to - Work safely near water Identify hazards and deploy measures for scene safety. Identify features and hazards associated with moving water. Perform rescue from land using the ‘Rescue formula’.

Working in partnership to make Dorset safer 4 Types of Water Risks Harbours Offshore Fast / Deep Running Rivers Reservoirs Ponds / Lakes Quarries Mine Shafts Local Flooding.

Working in partnership to make Dorset safer 5 Tasks carried out in Water Risk Areas Working alongside water Working on or being transported on water. Pumping from open water Water Rescues Mud / Slurry / Sand incidents Ice rescues

Working in partnership to make Dorset safer 6 Scope Water awareness is for safety of staff working near or alongside water. Staff should not enter the water unless absolutely necessary and then only after a DRA. Fire boots are only waterproof to mid calf.

Working in partnership to make Dorset safer 7 Hazard Zone The hazard zone or inner cordon is a minimum of 3 metres horizontally from the water’s edge. The zone will be set following the DRA.

Working in partnership to make Dorset safer 8 PPE Full fire kit –Work restraint (SWAH 1) or –Life jacket For staff within the hazard zone

Working in partnership to make Dorset safer 9 PPE (continued) When working in or near water, the fire helmet chin strap should be left done up subject to dynamic risk assessment (DRA)and analytical risk assessment (ARA). When working at height near water, use the DRA and ARA to determine the outcome of a fall into water and to decide whether the chin strap should be undone or done up. Assess the risk of a neck injury from entering the water from height with chin strap done up, compared to entering the water with the chin strap undone and the risk of a head injury from colliding with objects, for example boats, pontoons or rocks.
