Victorian Schools Nearly every Victorian child went to school. They might have had a classroom like this. The children would have sat extremely still because they would have been scared to get the cane!

The Teacher Victorian teachers aren’t exactly nice. They carry the cane everywhere. The children are always good and do as they’re told because otherwise they would have got it!

The Cane The cane was used to give discipline to naughty children which hurt a lot. The teacher would carry it around all the time! If you were naughty you might have had to choose which cane you would be hit with. The teacher might break the cane by bending it if they were really cross. Instead of the cane some children had the slipper or the ruler across the hand, or fingers. All the children would have sat straight and would have been quiet. Children in those days were meant to be seen and not heard!

The Head teacher! The head teacher was normally the worst and the scariest! Sometimes if you were bad you had to write hundreds of lines, on your hands and knees!They normally look like giants to the children.

Children at School Children were very good and never spoke unless they were asked. They normally were scared and frightened about going to school!!

In the classroom There was desks for children to sit at. Children never talked in lessons, because they were scared to get caught.

In the classroom 2 At school they had playtime, but even then they were still quite quiet. In the classroom the children sat very still with their arms folded.

Playtime! At playtime it was the only time when children were allowed to make some noise. The teachers were always watching though, waiting with the cane!!

Games The games that the children played would only amuse them at playtime. Because the teachers didn’t like them to have fun in lessons. The games the children played were hopscotch, marbles, hoops and tag.

Lessons The lessons were based on the three R’s. Reading, wRiting, aRithmetic. They would chant tables and spelling until word perfect.

Lessons Take 2 The children would have been put on the spot to ask questions. The teacher would point to the child and they would stand and answer the questions.

Lessons Take 3 If you got the question wrong you were either called stupid or given the dunce cap. If you kept getting the question wrong you could get the cane, slipper or ruler.

Leaving School! When the children were about years old they would have left school. They then go to work. They would have probably been happy to leave school then, but they were going to go into a far more dangerous life!
