ME 4182: Team Purple Cobras Week 6 Deliverables Mid-Term Presentation ‘The Cane Claw’ Andrew Ogden Nick Fila Greg Freisinger Tracy Jenkins Nate Smiga

ME 4182: Team Purple Cobras Objectives zProblem Statement zDesign Partition zConceptual Designs zPatent Search zSelection Analysis zDesign Direction

ME 4182: Team Purple Cobras Problem Statement z To provide a stable walking aid for those with limited mobility and flexibility while enhancing their ability to pick up, or reach objects. z Intended Market yElderly yHip replacement patients yKnee replacement patients yArthritic clients  Specifications yRigid and stable yLightweight yAble to hold 1 lb ySensitive to fragile objects yUseable as cane when holding objects

ME 4182: Team Purple Cobras Design Partition zDesign ‘effortless’ method of the motion activator. Options: 1) Button 2) Hand Pump 3) Lever zDesign of the force to transfer motion to closing device. Options: 1) Pneumatic force 2) Spring force 3) Cable tension zDesign of the joints of the closing device. Options: 1) Riveted joints 2) Bolt joints 3) Track system zDesign of the force system to hold closing device shut. Options: 1) Pre-loaded spring force 2) Spring force 3) Lever system

ME 4182: Team Purple Cobras Extendable Retracting Scoop zAdvantages: y Simple to use y Versatile zDisadvantages: y Complex Design y Limits to scoop size This device uses a spring loaded dust-pan type scoop, which is released through a mechanism to be placed on the handle. Object is swept along the ground and trapped against blocking plate. Conceptual Designs

ME 4182: Team Purple Cobras Retracting Globe Capsule Interior quarter circles drop and scoop the desired object Button Activated Piston pushes two quarter circles apart Power Transmitted through cable Object ends up housed inside globe compartment zAdvantages: y Versatile y Compact Design zDisadvantages: y Limits To Scoop Size y Must be made of clear material, yet be very strong This device contains a spring loaded inner casing, which is released by a button on the cane handle. Object will be fully enclosed in the capsule. Conceptual Designs

ME 4182: Team Purple Cobras Thin Metal Elastic Claws zAdvantages: y Flexible Pickup zDisadvantages: y Wears out more easily than other designs. Secondary Release This device uses a simple plunger system, in which when a button on the handle is pressed, the claws will expand out. When the button is released, the spring loaded plunger system will retract with the entrapped object inside. Conceptual Designs

ME 4182: Team Purple Cobras Retractable Trap Doors zAdvantages: y Fully Enclosed Capture zDisadvantages: y Must be held slightly off ground y Trap Door bottoms must be made very strong This device contains two trap doors on the bottom of the cane, which are hinged and kept closed by springs. The doors are opened via the hand grip, and upon releasing the grip, the doors will again close, trapping the object inside. Fully enclosed area Trap doors shown in both open and shut positions Conceptual Designs

ME 4182: Team Purple Cobras Replaceable Sticky Pads zAdvantages: y Versatile, Simple, Intuitive Operation zDisadvantages: y Pads have limited life (Costly to maintain) This device uses a spring loaded sticky pad that will press against a dropped object and in turn pick up the fallen item. Sticky pads are attached to the plunger system with Velcro to allow easy replacement once the pad loses stickiness. Conceptual Designs

ME 4182: Team Purple Cobras Object Manipulation Apparatus zPatent No.: US 6,820,628 zDate of Patent: Nov. 23, 2004 zApparatus and methods are provided for versatile object manipulation devices that allow a user to manipulate objects. The devices may be used to place an object and to retrieve an object. This is achieved by placing an object retrieval mechanism at one end region of a shaft and placing two or more handles at an opposite end region of the shaft. Patent Search

ME 4182: Team Purple Cobras Adjustable Cane With Built-In Pickup Means zPatent No.: US 5,392,800 zDate of Patent: Feb. 28, 1995 zA cane device that provides a remote object gripping mechanism, and a rod providing a righting means for the device. The remote object gripping mechanism is comprised of a trigger, a gripping claw and a connecting linkage of a cable. Pick-up means Actuator Patent Search
