SIMILE A simile is a phrase or sentence that compares one thing to another using the words like or as. For example:  Rudolph's nose is as red as a stoplight. Rudolph's nose was like a shiny Christmas ornament.

METAPHOR A metaphor is a phrase or sentence that compares one thing to another and DOES NOT use the words like or as. For example:  Rudolph's nose is a stoplight. Rudolph's nose was a shiny Christmas ornament. The stoplight on the front of Rudolph’s face lit the way.
