EFFECT OF MONTH OF REAPING ON YIELD OF SUGARCANE By Orphiel Brown Sugar Industry Research Institute Kendal Road, Mandeville

Introduction Present methods of cane prediction are unscientific Result in grave disparity between actual and estimated yields This paper does not seek to present a model for cane estimation Instead it seeks to determine if the month of reaping of a cane field affects its subsequent yield

Data  Obtained from CYS Database  December to June for 2 estates  10 years to 1998  No lower limit *  Upper limit of 160 tc/ha for yield  January to June for all others  Plant cane omitted  Assumed to be normal

Analysis done by ? Estates/Farms ? All island ? Ecological Areas -Irrigated -Rain-fed

Method of Analysis/Presentation  ANOVA with Month as a factor  Chart of MEANS with LSD intervals

Results  ANOVA is highly significant  Rapidly declining yields except Worthy Park and Cambria  Highest yields when reaped between December & March

Yield vs Month of Reaping - Appleton

Yield vs Month of Reaping - Frome

Yield vs Month of Reaping - Monymusk

Yield vs Month of Reaping - Bernard Lodge

Yield vs Month of Reaping - Long Pond

Yield vs Month of Reaping - Hampden

Yield vs Month of Reaping - Tropicana

Yield vs Month of Reaping - Worthy Park

Yield vs Month of Reaping - Cambria

Yield vs Month of Reaping - Irrigated Areas

Yield vs Month of Reaping - Rainfed Areas

Yield vs Month of Reaping - All Island

Conclusions/Recommendations  Month of reaping does affect subsequent cane yields  To obtain yields > 65 tc/ha, reap fields between December and April, inclusive  Do not extend cropping time beyond April
