The Setting

S The Maze  A war has broken out between man and Griever and blood and machinery fly everywhere. The Gladers begin to realize that they must get Teresa and Thomas to the Griever hole. They form a barricade around them protecting them from Grievers that is a wall which protects them. The Griever hole is dark and slimy and more Grievers surrounded the group; only about half of the Gladers made it through the hole.

S The Glade  The Glade is a giant courtyard several times the size of a football field. The ground is stone with tuffs of grass sticking out from the cracks. It is enclosed by the four walls that lead into the maze. The only way out are the doors on all four sides. The Glade is seperated into four sections. The Homestead, The Bloodhouse, The Deadheads and the Gardens. The glade also includes The Box, The Slammer and the Map Room.

The Plot

Exposition P Exposition  The exposition is when Thomas arrives at the Glade and the reader is then introduced to the main charter and the ways of the Glade

P Rising Action  When the girl arrives at the Maze and unusual events occur that do not display order in the civilization.  Also when Alby and Minho find an unconscious Griever in the Glade.

P Climax  The Maze is solved and the Gladers decide to fight their way out of the Maze.

P Falling Action  The Gladers fight their way through the Griever hole and go down a tunnel after they enter the code that shut down the Grievers

The Main Characters

c Thomas  Thomas, often shortened to "Tom", is the main protagonist of The Maze Runner. Thomas is named after Thomas Edison. His last name isn't mentioned in the book yet. He is a major character  The only description of Thomas' appearance is from Chuck, who said, "I'd say you're sixteen. And in case you were wondering, five foot nine.... brown hair and as ugly as a pile of klunk." pinterest.com

c Chuck  Though he is the youngest of the Gladers, Chuck is very helpful -- but likes to talk a lot. After being the "Greenbean" in the Glade for a month, he witnesses the arrival of a teenage boy named Thomas, who Chuck almost instantly befriends. Thomas learns more about the Gladers from both Chuck and Alby, the leader of the Gladers. Chuck is an antagonist. He is an antagonist.  Chuck was about twelve years old. He is described as pudgy, with long brown hair and blue eyes. mazerunnerfandom.net

c Teresa  Teresa Agnes was the only female Glader and Thomas's best friend. She is named after Mother Teresa, a catholic saint, leading to the deduction that the girls in group B are named after religious figures. tumblr.com

C Teresa - Continued  Teresa's first introduction, stated "she was thin, but not too small. maybe five and a half feet tall... She looked like she could be fifteen or sixteen years old, and her hair was tar black. But the thing that had really stood out to Thomas was her skin: pale, white as pearls. She is also described as "really pretty”. More than pretty. Beautiful." with "Silky hair, flawless skin, perfect lips, and long legs." Also mentioned in the book is that her eyes are "burning blue.“ She is also a protagonist.

c Newt  Newt is a Glader and Alby’s second-in- command. Newt is a boy with blond hair and a square jaw. It is said that he has an odd accent. And he is taller than Alby, despite the one year age difference. Newt is a protagonist.  Newt was described as being rather tall and muscular, with blonde hair that came down over his shoulders. asktheshanks.tumblr.com

c Alby  Alby was a character in The Maze Runner and was the leader of the Gladers He is named after Albert Einstein.  He is described as being about 17 years old. He has black hair, clean shaven, and dark skin. He usually has, as Thomas describes it, a "permanent scowl." harrypotterforum.com

The Mood

M Maze Runner  Definition of Mood = A feeling that a literary story conveys. Writers use a variety of techniques including word choice, dialogue, description, and plot complications to establish moods.  In the beginning of the book, there was not really any mood because the story had just begun, but the author let us feel everything that Thomas had felt after being released out of “ The Box “. Also, the new girl arrives and creates emotions with Thomas.  Around the middle of the book it had become much more interesting. Thomas was curious and also started to gain more memories about himself. When Thomas became trapped in the Maze after trying to save Alby and Minho, it was extremely hard to stop reading the story.  At the end of the story, all the exciting action ends and the story becomes less interesting. Everyone is happy and there is nothing happening.

Figurative Language

Fl Simile  Simile = a figure of speech in which two unlike things are explicitly compared.  Example = Harsh sounds of chains and pulleys, like the workings of a ancient steel factory, echoed, through the room.

Fl Personification  Personification = the attribution of a personal nature or character to inanimate objects or abstract notions, especially as a rhetorical figure.  Example = You voice reminds me of the noise the waves made when i was a kid.

Fl Imagery  Imagery = the formation of mental images, figures, or likenesses of things, or of such images collectively.  Example = Ben’s head snapped violently to the left, twisting his body until he landed on his stomach, his feet pointed toward Thomas. He made no sound

Fl Onomatopoeia  Onomatopoeia = the formation of a word, as cuckoo, meow, honk, or boom, by imitation of a sound made by or associated with its referent.  Example =...pulling it shut behind them with a loud clonck.

FL Alliteration  Alliteration = the commencement of two or more words of a word group with the same letter, as in apt alliteration's artful aid.  We could not find any forms of alliteration in the book, or online.

FL Metaphor  Metaphor = something used, or regarded as being used, to represent something else; emblem; symbol.  Example = Your so stupid you might as well be a dog!

FL Foreshadowing  Foreshadowing = to show or indicate beforehand; prefigure  We could not find any examples of foreshadowing in the story or online.

TR Resolution And Theme  The resolution is when the Gladers make their way out of the Maze and into the safety of the rescuers.  The theme was that nothing must overcome the power of a friendship and that even if there are differences between to people, if you work together, everything will turn out better. flasharcade.com
