VCS Virtual Fabric NATIVE FABRIC-BASED MULTITENANCY AT SCALE Allocates logical fabric(s) for each tenant within a shared physical fabric Based on TRILL Fine-Grained Labels (IETF draft standard) Provides support for overlapping VLANs, VLAN scale and transport VLAN services Supports up to 8k VCS Virtual Fabrics per physical fabric VLAN10 Virtual Fabric 5000 Customer A Customer A One of the most important innovations in the modern network is network virtualization. The ability to carve up a single physical network into thousands of virtual or logical networks addresses many concerns with traditional networks, including long provisioning times and limited flexibility. Brocade supports two options for deploying virtualization within the fabric: (1) native VCS vFabrics and (2) support for overlays, such as VMware NSX. Our VCS Virtual Fabric feature is native to the fabric itself, with no interdependencies on hypervisors or vswitches. Leveraging standards-track extensions to TRILL, we allow the customer to carve up a single physical fabric into as many as 8k virtual fabrics. This simple, native fabric capability allows a cloud service provider or enterprise to accommodate many tenants, with overlapping VLANs, to be supported in the fabric. And we have implemented the Virtual Fabric feature using VLAN syntax and semantics to minimize any learning curve for the customer. VLANs have been the primary form of multi-tenancy in networks for the last 15 years, and we have simply extended that construct by eliminating the 4k boundary of VLANs. Network Virtualization with Brocade VCS & VMware NSX vCloud Brocade VCS Fabric: Automated, resilient physical foundation VMware NSX: Network virtualization overlay and controller Brocade VCS Gateway for VMware NSX: Bridges virtual and physical infrastructure 1 2 VMware NSX Controller 2 1 3 The second technique for virtualizing the network is through the use of overlays. VMware’s NSX technology and Microsoft’s Hyper-V network virtualization are good examples of overlays, providing virtual network capability built with tunnels between vSwitch endpoints. In this solution, there are three key components. The first is the VCS Fabric, known as the underlay. Despite the advantages of a virtual network, the physical underlay still needs to be provisioned, monitored, tuned for performance, upgraded and scaled over time. It needs to be automated, resilient, efficient and highly available. The key question is, which physical network technology can best deliver on these values? Brocade VCS Fabric technology delivers best-in-class automation with features such as zero-touch switch and link provisioning, self-forming trunks and the ability to manage an entire fabric of many physical switches as a single device. To optimize the efficiency of the data plane, VCS Fabric technology makes use of all links in the network all of the time, with multi-pathing and traffic load balancing at layers 1/2/3 in the network, delivering two times the network utilization than is possible with legacy LAN technology or even competing fabric offerings. The VCS fabric also scales out non-disruptively. Switching capacity is added to the fabric without the need to forklift upgrade any of the existing switches or revisit the topology. Another key question arises with overlays: where is the networking team going to find the extra cycles to provision, manage and monitor their virtual networks? Brocade VCS Fabric automation reduces the day-to-day operational overhead of the physical network by up to 50%, freeing network administrators to now have time to learn and manage the virtual networks in their environment. The second component is the overlay technology itself, including its controller. This is the component that instantiates the logical networks through the use of tunnels between virtualized endpoints. Every data center will continue to have some physical (non-virtualized) assets. In order to communicate with these physical assets, the virtual network must include a third component, a gateway capability that translates between tunnel protocols and VLANs. This gateway function will be critical to ensuring end-to-end connectivity between all assets. For customers adopting VMware NSX, in particular, the Brocade VCS Gateway for VMware NSX provides the industry’s highest performing and most resilient solution for bridging between virtual networks and the physical, non-virtualized assets in the data center. Brocade VCS Multi-pathing at Multiple Layers DRAMATIC INCREASES IN NETWORK UTILIZATION AND RELIABILITY Layer 3 Core FEATURE BENEFIT 33% Near-perfect load balancing across all links in a trunk group L1: Trunking with frame striping All links utilized with flow-based load balancing L2: Equal Cost Multi-Pathing (ECMP) One of the primary value propositions of our VCS Fabric technology is network efficiency and utilization. Let’s take a closer look at how we do this. <CLICK> First, at L1, we load balance every frame across all of the links within a trunk group using our patented frame striping technology. This is technology we leveraged from our fibre channel portfolio and with it we achieve near-perfect load balancing across up to 8 Ethernet links within a trunk group. Next, we utilize TRILL to achieve Equal Cost Multi-Pathing at L2 within the fabric. This allows us to use all available network bandwidth and, unlike spanning tree, is a far more efficient means of ensuring loop-free redundancy within the network by allowing all links to be fully active and utilized. Finally, at L3, the fabric automatically load balances all flows among a number of L3 instances that collectively act as a single L3 gateway. Today we support load balancing across up to 4 L3 gateways – 2x what the leading competitor can do – and our design allows us to scale to an unlimited number of gateways in the future. This combination of multi-pathing at L1, L2 and L3 provide unprecedented network utilization, efficiency and availability. And in keeping with our focus on automation and simplicity, these features are enabled automatically within the fabric, without any complex or lengthy configuration by a network administrator. Brocade VCS Fabric L3: Fabric load balancing across multiple L3 gateways Improved scalability and resiliency

The first three VDX switches show here are the 1st Generation VDX switch i.e VDX 6710, VDX 6720, VDX 6730 VDX 6710 is lowest entry level switch for Ethernet fabric technology in market. It comes in 1RU form factor and has 48 ports of 1Gbase-T and 6 10Gbe SFP+ ports for uplink. Its port to port latency ranges from 600ns to 1.8us. The VDX 6720 was the 1st VDX Ethernet Fabric switch to be launched back in Q12011. It comes in 2 form factors 1RU and 2RU . 1RU form factor has up to 24X 10Gbe SFP+ ports and 2RU has up to 60 Gbe SFP+ ports. It is one of the lowest latency Ethernet Fabric Switch with latency ranging from 600ns to 1.8us. The VDX 6730 Switch is exactly similar in architecture and capability to the VDX 6720 , except it comes with up to 16 native FC ports. These FC ports can be used for integration with one or more SAN network. The VDX 6730 also comes with Access Gateway Functionality. The 2nd generation switch is the VDX 6740 family, and it comes in two flavors, fiber and copper. The fiber version is the VDX 6740 and the copper version is the VDX 6740T. Both Switches are exactly the same from a feature and performance standpoint; the only difference is type of ports. The VDX 6740 is a 1RU switch which comes with 48 ports of 1/10Gbe SFP+ ports and 4 40Gbe QSFP+ ports. Each 40Gbe QSFP+ ports can be broken down in to 4 10Gbe SFP+ ports , providing a total of 64 ports of 10Gbe SFP+ ports in 1RU form factor. The only difference for VDX 6740T switch is that it comes with 48 ports of 10Gbase-T with 4 40Gbe QSFP+ ports. All the ports in the 1RU form factor are packed in to Single ASIC design . Because of single ASIC design , overall performance increases giving 850ns any port to port latency for VDX 6740 and 3us any port to port latency for VDX 6740T. The VDX 6740T-1G is similar in terms of features and functionality , but with one unique differentiator. VDX 6740T-1G comes with 48 ports of 1Gbe and 2 X 40Gbe ports in base versions. All of the 48X1Gbase-T ports can be upgraded to 10Gbase-T ports with a simple s/w license. This is very unique capability for upgrading a switch from 1Gbe to 10Gbe with out rip and replacing a switch or re-architecting the network . All VDX switches are SDN-ready. Their h/w supports technologies like Openflow. It also supports overlay technologies like VXLAN and can also act as VXLAN tunnel end point. Keeping multi-tenancy requirements in mind, the VDX 6740 switches also support Brocade Virtual fabric technology based on Fine Grained Label technology. One another unique feature for VDX 6740 is Flex ports. VDX 6740 supports up to 32 FLEX ports ,and all these ports can act as Fiber Channel (FC) ports or Ethernet ports. Finally, recognizing that customers prefer to pay for infrastructure only as they need it, all the fixed VDX switches support Ports-on-Demand licensing. With this capability, customers pay for only the ports they need now, and can easily enable additional ports on the switch through a simple license key and no hardware upgrade.
The Brocade VDX 8770 Modular Switch Family SCALING VCS FABRICS Brocade VDX 8770 Switch KEY DIFFERENTIATION Brocade VCS Fabric-enabled Deepest buffers to absorb traffic microburst 3.6 microseconds any-to-any port latency Scales to 1K-10K-100K server ports and 384,000 virtual machines per chassis Extensive portfolio of 10/40/100GbE blades Future-proofed: 100G Ports-on-Demand (PoD) license SDN-ready with hardware assist for overlay network virtualization, such as VXLAN 4- and 8-slot chassis 576 ports of 10GbE 216 ports of 40GbE 48 ports of 100GbE This is the VDX 8770 modular switch and, like the fixed VDX switches, it’s purpose built for Ethernet fabrics in the data center. There are two models, an 8-slot chassis and a 4-slot-chassis. The 8-slot chassis supports up to 384 ports of line rate, non-blocking 10GE or up to 96 ports of line rate, non-blocking 40GE or up to 32 ports of 100GE, also at full line rate. There is also a 1GE line card as well. Let me focus your attention on the key differentiators of this product, the true innovations that set this new product apart from all its competitors. Most important is our VCS Fabric functionality. All of the automation, efficiency and agility I explained earlier is built into this switch, but at a scale well beyond what competing Ethernet fabric products can offer today. Specifically, using this new chassis, customers can now build a fabric with up to 8000 switch ports and with up to 384k VMs attached to a single fabric. This level of scalability will give customers confidence that Brocade technology can scale as they grow, supporting even the most dense VM environments. Because fabric performance is so critical to ensuring real-time applications meet end user expectations, we’re also delivering the industry’s lowest port- to-port latency at 3.58usec. To ensure maximum usage of all fabric bandwidth and maximum uptime through redundancy, we perform multi-pathing at all layers of the fabric. And, finally, recognizing that data center innovation will continue at a very rapid pace, we’ve designed the new 8770 to be ready for emerging data center technologies. We’ve included an industry-leading 4Tb per slot backplane to ensure the platform’s bandwidth will grow with your needs. We’ve also built into the ASICs on this platform the flexibility to perform line- rate switching, deep packet inspection and control for network virtualization protocols such as VXLAN. This combination of innovations is absolutely unique in the market and clearly extends our technology leadership of the Ethernet Fabric category.
Brocade VDX 8770 — Performance Leadership VM Scalability (Higher is better) BUFFERS (Higher is better - to absorb microbursts) LATENCY (Lower is better) In 1000s In GB In usec One of the key tenants in our approach to VDX hardware design is the use of our own ASIC technology. With our own ASICS, we are able to optimize for the network requirements and performance needs that are unique to the virtualized, on-demand data center. This is where merchant silicon, with its many masters to serve and a broad variety of use cases to address, wouldn’t allow us to differentiate and fully optimize for data center applications. For example, you can see from this chart that we have optimized for deep buffer, latency and scalability on the VDX 8770, three variables that often compete and require tradeoffs to be made. In this case, we have optimized our ASICs to support 33% more VMs than the closest competitor, while at the same time delivering the lowest port-to- port latency and deepest buffer per port of those same competitor chassis products. Brocade VCS Fabric Strategic Directions Network Virtualization Scale Programmatic Control New Hybrid Platforms Extending virtual networks between DCs Increasing scale in single and multi-fabric deployments Programmatic control with native REST APIs and OpenFlow 1.3 New hybrid fixed/modular leaf and spine switches Let me highlight some of the strategic directions we are pursuing with VCS Fabric technology. Because we believe network virtualization is one of the most important applications of SDN technologies in the data center, we will continue to enhance our Network Virtualization support within VCS, both natively and in support of overlay models. Extending virtual networks over the WAN and increasing VXLAN gateway resiliency are two such roadmap items. Our focus on Scale includes enhancing the number of switches that can participate in a single fabric as well as enabling multi-fabric architectures with features such as Logical Chassis and virtual fabrics extending across multiple physical fabrics. Enabling Programmatic Control with fabric-level APIs based on REST and adding OpenFlow 1.3 support are important developments for customers and partners who want greater programmatic control over the fabric. And we will continue to evolve our VDX hardware platform family with the addition of hybrid fixed/modular switches for leaf and spine use cases, lowering switch costs and increasing flexibility at the same time.
