 Motor vehicle crashing are the leading killer of teens. Everyday, approximately five sixteen and seventeen-year-old drivers are treated in the New York State hospitals due to car crashes.  Car crashes while driving to and from school, especially after school, at night with other teens in the car, are common.  For fatal crashes, the largest proportion of crashes involving drivers ages occurs from 9p.m-midnight  Having 2 or more passengers in the car, more than triples the risk of a fatal crash when a teen is behind the wheel

 According to research done by The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, teens whose parents set driving rules and pay attention to their child’s activities in a helpful, supportive way are: -half as likely to be in a crash -70% less likely to drive while intoxicated -twice as likely to wear seat belts - 30%less likely to use a cell phone while driving

Parents hold the keys to keeping their teens safe behind the wheel. Teens mimic their parents, the way they see you drive will be how they drive, parents ought to set fine examples for their teens  Nationally, teen drivers (ages 13-19) are at a four times greater risk for crashes than older adults and are involved in 15 percent of fatal crashes, but make up 6.7 percent of the total driving population.

 Specifically, between 2005 and 2009, an average of 422 teen auto accident fatalities occurred each month during summer months, but dropped to 363 during non-summer months.  Tennessee had the 8 th most teen driver deaths between 2003 and Since 2003 more than 227,000 of TN’s year old drivers have been involved in a crash.  914 of those crashes were fatal crashes resulting in 971 deaths.

 Through peer education, we are striving to impress into the mind of youths the overwhelming danger in driving while: -under the influence -not wearing a seat belt -texting or talking on a phone while driving
