/ Desart is the non-profit peak industry body for over forty Central Australian Aboriginal art centres. Art centre members are community-based enterprises, owned and managed by Aboriginal people in their communities. They provide economic, social and cultural benefits. Desart member’s represent approximately 3000 artists, from sixteen distinct language groups spread across the Central desert region of Australia.

The Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation Ltd is proud to host more than forty Art Centres from across Australia to our 2014 event in August. Together, these unique Indigenous-owned Art Centres represent over 1800 Indigenous artists. The Fair provides an amazing opportunity for arts industry buyers and the public, to purchase art directly from Indigenous owned and incorporated Art Centres.

The Fair showcases the work of emerging and established artists, and provides a space for visitors to meet the artists, and learn from the variety of different cultural groups across Australia. There is a range of styles, mediums and products available including: paintings on canvas, bark paintings, works on paper including limited edition prints, sculpture, didgeridoos, fibre art and cultural regalia. The diversity of Indigenous art at the Fair is remarkable!

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award (NATSIAA) 2014 marked the 31st Anniversary of the NATSIAAs with Telstra remaining the principal sponsor of the Awards again in 2014.

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award (NATSIAA) The Award was established in 1984 as the National Aboriginal Art Award by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. The aim of the Award is to recognise the important contribution made by Indigenous artists and to promote appreciation and understanding of the quality and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art from regional and urban based Indigenous artists throughout Australia, working in traditional and contemporary media. The Award attracts a range of Indigenous artists from all parts of the country and about 100 works are selected each year from around 300 entries.

Arts NT Arts NT is a branch within the Department of Arts and Museums (DoAM). Arts NT supports, develops and promotes growth of the creative arts sector for the benefit of the Territory, visitors, the community and economy through providing advice, partnerships, and providing financial and infrastructure support. Key programs include the NT Arts Grants Program and the Australian Government Regional Arts Fund which distribute funding through the advertised rounds. Funded projects further the vision of exploring, expressing and showcasing Northern Territory identity through arts and culture.

Arts NT Arts NT participates in national arts and culture policy working groups, research and evaluation projects that impact on how the arts make a positive contribution to healthy and creative communities. Arts NT’s role in cross agency advice and collaborative projects within the NTG and all spheres of government aims to ensure the Territory’s position in the Australian context is strengthened and supported. Arts NT aims to ensure that all Territory residents have access to a variety of arts and cultural activities either as audience or as active participants.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts make a rich contribution to world culture and Australia’s diverse contemporary culture and national identity. The Council also acknowledges the need for artists, communities and arts organisations to conserve and preserve traditional and contemporary artistic expressions for future generations to appreciate, learn from and understand their cultural inheritance and identity as Indigenous peoples.
