Review: Ways to make your writing better 1. Mix up the length and types of your sentences (use a mix of simple, compound, and complex sentences) 1.Don’t say: We are done reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Don’t bring the novel to class. Bring your textbook to class. Don’t forget to bring your textbook. 2.Instead, say: Since we are done reading To Kill a Mockingbird, don’t bring it to class anymore. Instead, bring your textbook. Don’t forget!

HOW WOULD YOU RE- WRITE? The school should have uniforms. Students won’t need to compete with clothes. Students won’t have to figure out what to wear. Students won’t break dress code as much. Students won’t get in trouble as much.

HOW WOULD YOU RE- WRITE? A strict dress code is not necessary. Students will break the rules anyway. Students will have more detentions. Students won’t be in class as much. Students will study less.

III. Another way to improve your writing 2. Keep it simple: Don’t use unnecessary words Don’t say: Many people who work at their employment experience that most employment places require or make you wear nice clothes or professional clothes and sometimes even a suit and tie. Instead, say: Most jobs require professional clothes like a suit and tie.

HOW WOULD YOU RE- WRITE? Many people that study in this school feel angry, mad, and furious when they have to or are forced to wear the same outfits that everyone else wears which are called uniforms every single day instead of being able to wear whatever they want every single day.

HOW WOULD YOU RE- WRITE? The Arthurian legends are legendary stories that tell the story of King Arthur and how he became king and what happened or occurred during his ruling and his position of being king. He married a very beautiful and pretty woman named Gwynevere who became the queen, but both Arthur and Gwynevere struggled with and had a hard time being faithful. They had affairs with other people they weren’t married to.

3. Maintain parallel sentence structure: Use the same pattern of words, phrases, or clauses within the same sentence. Don’t say: We want to eat, to sleep, and time for relaxing. Instead, say: We want to eat, to sleep, and to relax. OR: We want to eat, sleep, and relax. III. ANOTHER WAY TO IMPROVE WRITING: PARALLELISM

Don’t say: His boss said that he was a poor worker because he waited until the last minute to do the project, completed the report in a careless manner, and his motivation was low. Instead, say: His boss said that he was a poor worker because he waited until the last minute to do the project, completed his report in a careless manner, and lacked motivation.

HOW WOULD YOU RE- WRITE? Larry likes hiking, swimming, and to ride a bicycle. The production manager was asked to write his report quickly, accurately, and in a detailed manner.
