Leadership Definitions and Qualities of a Leader Leadership Development 4-2 b

Leadership – what is it? You all have experienced “leadership” in some form or another (e.g. Coaches, Club Officers, Teachers, Mentors, or church leaders). These experiences made an impact on you, either positive or negative, and will help you to continue learn about leadership through your Citadel Experience. To help you understand this concept we will examine leadership as a definition and the qualities that make good leaders

Leadership – a definition Definitions are important to communicate a common understanding. Creating a definition for “Leadership” will help you take ownership of this concept Leadership is best described as a process that involves relationship and influence Leader SituationSubordinate Leadership

Group Work Work as a group and draft a short definition of leadershipWork as a group and draft a short definition of leadership Be ready to share this with the rest of the groupBe ready to share this with the rest of the group

Leadership is influencing people – by providing purpose, direction and motivation – while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization. Leadership is the process of followers and the leader engaging in reciprocal influence to achieve a shared purpose. Leadership is all about getting people to work together to make things happen that might not otherwise occur or prevent things from happening that ordinarily would take place. Leaders are not born. They are made. They are made just like anything else... through hard work. That's the price we have to pay to achieve that goal or any goal. - Vince Lombardi Leadership: The art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it. - Dwight D. Eisenhower Leadership Definitions and Quotes

Qualities of a Leader From your experience you can probably pick out who is a “good leader” –Coach, teacher, mentor, pastor, civic leader What is it about that individual – their personal qualities that make them stand out? What did you learn from their example of leadership?

Group Work Work as a small group again to develop 3 3 to 5 key qualities you will want to see from your leaders Be ready to share these with the rest of the group

A Leader... believes in an optimistic vision for the future. motivates others to achieve. demonstrates loyalty. respects the rights of others. sets a good example. pursues excellence in all endeavors. treats others with concern and civility. demonstrates the courage to act responsibly. possesses uncompromising integrity. is devoted to duty and honor From the College Catalogue for The Citadel
