1. A research paper. 2. Use PRIMARY & SECONDARY sources to support the topic that you are writing about. 3. You must prove your thesis in the paper by using your primary or secondary sources. 4. Thesis: What YOU want to PROVE in your paper. 5. DBQ is to be in MLA format that you learned in English. 6. Also use MLA format when citing your documents.

A thesis statement declares what you believe and what you intend to prove. A good thesis statement makes the difference between a thoughtful research project and a simple retelling of facts. The thesis statement is typically located at the end of your opening paragraph, back it up with two-three arguments. Remember, your reader will be looking for your thesis. Make it clear, strong, and easy to find.

From what I know about Edgar Allen Poe he was a very great writer who wrote some very interesting pieces of literature. So you may ask yourself, how could he have possibly been a poor person? From reading these documents I believe that Edgar Allen Poe was a poor person. According to the documents he wrote many of his friends and family for money and loans. If he was a successful and writer why would he need to beg people for money? In this essay I will explain why I believe Edgar Allen Poe was poor person.

1. 12 point font. 2. Times New Roman FONT 3. Double Spaced 4. 5 Para graphs (Introduction, 3 Body, Conclusion) 5. 1 inch margins. 6. Citations. 7. MLA Format 8. 3 Quotes/paraphrases per body paragraph

Example… Edgar Allen Poe was a man who had little money, this is known because of the many letters he had written asking for help, “I have no where to sleep at night, but roam about the streets--- I am nearly exhausted”(Document A). *Citations come at end of quotes or paraphrases.*

1. Each paragraph should focus on ONE TOPIC. 2. Do not use SLANG words. (B/C, SHOWZ, ETC) 3. DO NOT USE PERSONAL PRONOUNS: (I, WE THINK, AS YOU CAN SEE..) 4. Do not use big words to try to sound smart…stick to what you know.

Opening Paragraph - It sets out the purpose of the paper. - IT MUST CONTAIN THE THESIS STATEMENT. - Background information or key terms used should be included in the opening. This information will provide some historical context and clarify the purpose of the paper. - DO NOT USE DOCUMENT REFERENCES IN THE OPENING.

Supporting Evidence - The body of the paper will consist of a number of paragraphs each designed to present evidence in support of the thesis. - The idea is to use the evidence to construct a logical argument so the reader will agree with your thesis. Each paragraph should be related to a single point.

The closing ties your paper together by rephrasing the thesis statement and recapping or summarizing the evidence
