MLA An Introduction Mrs. Starcevic

What do these signs mean?

We know what these signs mean because they are international symbols. They have the same meaning regardless of where you go.

Similarly, when you write an essay for English, History, music, drama, Geography, or Art it is important that you follow a set of guidelines know as the Modern Language Association Style Or MLA Style

There are two main parts: 1In-text citations (You will indicate where you have found your quotes or “proofs” in your essay) 2The Works Cited (is like a bibliography which lists all of the resources you have used).

Why do we use it? To let readers know where you found your information To prevent plagiarism To maintain consistency in how everyone writes

Exercise One: Examine the sample essay. Complete the questions on the handout. Be prepared to submit your answers and to share them with the class.

Welcome to your MLA Style Guide! Keep it safe and refer to it often as you write your essays!
