Information Literacy Defined A set of abilities that requires individuals: recognize what information is needed have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use it effectively Today’s technological changes diverse and abundant amount of information choices The reader must question authenticity, validity, and reliability.

VCCS Information Literacy Standards The following standards are included in the information literacy assessment as required by the VCCS. This website has tutorial modules to help students meet the information literacy standards.

Standard One The information literate student determines the nature and extent of information needed. Increase familiarity with the topic Identify key concepts and terms that describe the information Recognize the purpose and audience of potential resources

The information literate student accesses needed information effectively and efficiently. Develops a research plan Implements search strategies using different interfaces and search techniques Standard Two

What Can We Do? Give students the tools and resources to help them be successful. Make sure students are aware of CVCC’s Electronic databases Library instruction sessions (Liz Boothe) In the library In the classroom Off-campus center sites On-line tutorials

Two-thirds of the information available on the Web is hidden from view and is known as the "deep Web." The deep Web is where information is not free and is not included in popular search engine results. Library databases, for example, are deep Web subscription resources that are available online, but only to authorized users such as students enrolled in Virginia's community colleges.

Google Scholar Search Engine Provides a search of scholarly literature across many disciplines and sources, including theses, books, abstracts, and articles.

Google Advanced Search Google search engine Under advanced search can limit web sites to.edu.org.gov

Over 59 million sites

3 ½ million sites

Students will evaluate information and sources critically and incorporate findings into his or her knowledge base. Summarize the main ideas Review the text for main ideas Restates concepts in own words Identifies verbatim material that can be quoted using MLA or APA documentation style Standard Three

Student must understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use/access of information both ethically and legally. Intellectual property, copyright, and fair use of copyrighted material Demonstrates an understanding of what constitutes plagiarism Standard Four

Blackboard Safe Assign A plagiarism prevention service, offered by Blackboard. Helps educators prevent plagiarism by detecting unoriginal content in student papers.
