Information Literacy Defined A set of abilities that requires individuals: recognize what information is needed have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use it effectively Today’s technological changes diverse and abundant amount of information choices The reader must question authenticity, validity, and reliability.

VCCS Information Literacy Standards The following standards are included in the information literacy assessment as required by the VCCS. This website has tutorial modules to help students meet the information literacy standards.

Standard One The information literate student determines the nature and extent of information needed. Increase familiarity with the topic Identify key concepts and terms that describe the information Recognize the purpose and audience of potential resources

The information literate student accesses needed information effectively and efficiently. Develops a research plan Implements search strategies using different interfaces and search techniques Standard Two

The deep Web is where information is not free and is not included in popular search engine results. Library databases, for example, are deep Web subscription resources that are available online, but only to authorized users such as students enrolled in Virginia's community colleges.
