The Future of Learning Harvard Graduate School of Education July 29 – August 1, 2014

Changing contexts for learning Mind / brain researchThe digital revolutionGlobalization

Our Goals I.To understand critically three major societal changes shaping learning in the future. II.To ponder ways in which education might be changed and remain constant. I.To further our interest and capacity to enquire about the future of learning in multiple contexts.

Throughline #2 How might we rethink learning? How do we need to rethink the what, who and how of learning as a result of these changes or forces?

First: A note of thank you!

What do we know? How might we re-think learning? Rethinking life experience (engages mind/brain, emotion/cognition, individual/environment and contributes to our sense of self) Rethinking environments (embodying cultural ideals, values, affect, relationships, emotion, thinking dispositions (all positive or negative) Rethinking agency and individualization (learner responsibility, intrinsic motivation, individual neural activation paths…”the myth of averages”) Rethinking accountability (designing “age appropriate” curricula is not enough“…. “stop teaching- design environments”)

How might we rethink learning?

Throughline #1 What do we know? What do we know about globalization, the digital revolution, and mind/brain research and their influence on learning and education?
