Writing complete sentences with the word “Hay…” “Hay” means “There is” or “There are.” “Hay” is pronounced like “I” For example, “Hay dos sillas.” means “There are two chairs.”

Hay (con’t) On the quiz you will see pictures of classroom items. You will have to look at the pictures and write how many of the items there are. For example, if you see a picture of three chairs, you will have to write “Hay tres sillas.” ---”There are three chairs.” The classroom vocabulary that you will see are on the following page.

Describing location using complete sentences The last part of the written portion of the quiz involves looking at picture and using the verb “estar” and several phrases that indicate location. Vocabulary related to location. Encima de---above al lado de---next to, or beside debajo de—underneath delante de---in front of Detrás de--- behind

Location (cont’d) On the quiz, you will see a picture of a classroom. You will then have to write a sentence describing location. For example…. You will see in the classroom picture a flag underneath the clock, along with----la bandera /el reloj. You will then put it together with the word “está.” So, the correct answer would be….”La bandera está debajo del reloj.” “The flag is underneath the clock.”

So…. The most important things to know for this part would be… 1. The classroom vocabulary names. 2. The vocabulary related to location. 3. That “está” means “is” when talking about location. Few more examples…. La papelera está al lado del escritorio. (The wastepaper basket is next to the desk.) La silla está detrás del escritorio. (The seat is behind the desk.)
