Lesson 45 – In Ephesus 19:1-41 The “Ephesian Riot” vv Based upon Demetrius’ defense of Diana, the city was thrown into chaos vv Two of Paul’s companions were apprehended Other friends of Paul convinced him efforts to rescue them would not succeed

Lesson 45 – In Ephesus 19:1-41 The “Ephesian Riot” vv Based upon Demetrius’ defense of Diana, the city was thrown into chaos vv Most did not even know why they were there Alexander (a Jew) tried to quiet the crowd… they cried all the more “Great is Diana!!”

Lesson 45 – In Ephesus 19:1-41 The “Ephesian Riot” vv After 2 more hours, the town clerk finally prevailed with reason vv “Who doesn’t already know Diana’s greatness?” The assembly was unlawful…it was putting the city in jeopardy with Rome

Lesson 45 – In Ephesus 19:1-41 The “Ephesian Riot” vv After 2 more hours, the town clerk finally prevailed with reason vv If Demetrius, et al have complaints, the courts are open…let them use legal means He then dismissed the assembly

The Christians At Corinth

Events Leading Up To The Epistle… WWritten from somewhere in Macedonia 9:4 WWe “reasonably know” when it was written PPaul previously mentioned a “wide, effective door” open to him in Ephesus 1 Cor 16:9 TThe burning of magic books Acts 19:19 TThat “door” closed faster than Paul thought

Events Leading Up To The Epistle…  We “reasonably know” when it was written  That “door” closed faster than Paul thought  In this letter, Paul speaks of trouble and affliction in Asia 1:8a  He “despaired even to life”…he had the “sentence of death” in him 1:8b-9  The “Ephesian Riot” fits well Acts 19:23-41

The Christians At Corinth Events Leading Up To The Epistle…  We “reasonably know” when it was written  Leaving Ephesus, Paul tried to find Titus in Troas 2:12-13  He was so focused on hearing about Corinth he did not take advantage of another “open door”…he went on into Macedonia

The Christians At Corinth Events Leading Up To The Epistle…  We “reasonably know” when it was written  Later, in Macedonia, Paul did find Titus in Troas and heard what he wanted 7:5-16  The Corinthians had repented!!  Apparently after this meeting with Titus, Paul wrote the 2nd letter

The Christians At Corinth Events Leading Up To The Epistle…  Timothy & the 2nd letter –  Paul had sent him to Macedonia Acts 19:22  He was also to go to Corinth…Paul was not sure if Timothy would arrive there before he did 1 Cor 4:17 16:10-11  Paul joins Timothy in Macedonia 2 Cor 1:1

The Christians At Corinth Events Leading Up To The Epistle…  Paul’s “changing traveling plans” –  His initial plans are in the 2nd letter 1:15-16

Paul’s 3rd Journey © 1999 MANNA “First Travel Plans” (2 Cor. 1:15-16)

Paul’s 3rd Journey © 1999 MANNA “Second Travel Plans” (1 Cor. 16:5-6)

The Christians At Corinth Events Leading Up To The Epistle…  Paul’s “changing traveling plans” –  He wanted to “spare” the Corinthians, giving the 1st letter time to work, “bear fruit” 1:23  This “change in plans” led some to slander Paul, trying to discredit him as “fickle”… a charge he addresses & answers 1:17-24

The Christians At Corinth Events Leading Up To The Epistle…  Paul also mentions the collection for the needy saints chs. 8-9  The Corinthians had already spent a year gathering their funds 8:10  Paul encourages them to finish 8:11  God “loves a cheerful giver” 9:6-7

The Christians At Corinth Events Leading Up To The Epistle…  Possibly no other epistle gives us a glimpse into the heart of Paul than this letter  Sadly, it is a book often over-looked, or even ignored  Paul speaks often of affliction and anxiety 1:4-6, : : :7-10

The Christians At Corinth Events Leading Up To The Epistle…  Possibly no other epistle gives us a glimpse into the heart of Paul than this letter  More importantly, Paul speaks of the “comfort” gained by serving God in the greatest of causes…His kingdom 1:4 2: :6-7, :1-11 7:6, 13

The Christians At Corinth The Epistle… EEmphasizing the gospel ministry 1:1 – 7:16 GGod “comforts” His people 1:3-11 UUsed 10 times – comfort comes from brethren, His word, the gospel work PPaul is proud of the Corinthians…he knows the feeling is mutual 1:12-14
