Presentation transcript:

“Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Spirit teaches; comparing spiritual things with spiritual words.” (1 Cor. 2:13)

EMOTIONALISM I. EMOTION vs EMOTIONALISM A. Emotion: “A feeling, a subjective experience such as joy, sorrow, reverence, hate and love; A mental state that is often accompanied by physiological changes in the body.” (American Heritage Dictionary; Merriam-Webster) B. Emotionalism: “Undue indulgence in or display of emotion; tendency to regard things emotionally.” (Merriam-Webster)

EMOTIONALISM I. EMOTION vs EMOTIONALISM C. In Religion – Two Extremes 1. “Feel Good” or “Heartfelt” Religion. 2. Emotionless, Cold, Heartless Religion. BOTH extremes are wrong! Let us examine why…

EMOTIONALISM II. EMOTION HAS A PROPER PLACE A. Process Of Maturity – Reason Comes To Dominate: 1. Babies cry frequently & throw tantrums (emotional display) (1 Pet. 2:2). 2. Yet we expect older folks to control themselves (be reasonable) (1 Cor. 13:11).

EMOTIONALISM II. EMOTION HAS A PROPER PLACE B. Jesus Displayed Emotion: 1. Wept at Lazarus’ Tomb (Jn. 11:33-36). 2. Compassion For The Lost (Mt. 9:36). 3. Showed Tenderness Toward Children (Mk. 10:13-16). 4. Angered At Hardened Hearts (Mk. 3:5; Jn. 2:13-15).

EMOTIONALISM II. EMOTION HAS A PROPER PLACE C. Men Of God Displayed Emotion: 1. Paul Provoked By Idols (Acts 17:16). 2. Devout Men Lamented Stephen’s Death (Acts 8:2). 3. Ephesian Elders Wept Over Paul (Acts 20:37). 4. Pricked In Heart At Hearing Truth (Acts 2:37; 2 Cor. 7:10; 1 Cor. 14:24-25). 5. Joy In Obeying The Gospel (Acts 8:38).

EMOTIONALISM III. TRUTH NOT DETERMINED BY EMOTION A. Jacob’s Grief – thought Joseph dead (Gen. 37). B. Job’s Frustration In Trials – felt God caused his sorrows (Job 3:23; 6:8-9). C. Old Israel Felt At Peace – but God was very angry with them (Jer. 6:14-17). D. It is not in man to direct himself; God’s word is the correct standard (Jer. 10:23; Jer. 23:16-22; Ezk. 13:1-3). E. Proper feelings are subject to Truth (1 Cor. 13:6).

EMOTIONALISM IV. IMPROPER EMOTION IN SCRIPTURES A. Prophets of Baal (1 Kgs 18:26, 28, 29). B. Zedekiah’s false vision (1 Kgs 22:11, 24). C. Crowd that killed Stephen (Acts 7:54-60). D. Demetrius & Crowd For Diana (Acts 19:23-41). E. Rocky soil (Mt. 13:20-21). Improper Emotion Is Seen When It Hinders Acceptance Of Truth!

EMOTIONALISM V. ATTEMPTS TO JUSTIFY EMOTIONALISM A. Many link it to the Holy Spirit, but… 1. God SPOKE to His prophets (Exodus 4:10-16). 2. God revealed His WORD to His prophets (Is. 1:10; Jer. 1:2; Ezk. 1:3, etc.). 3. The Spirit was sent to TEACH Truth (John 14:26; 16:13; Acts 1:2). B. NO principle ever ranks feelings above Truth (Eph. 3:3-4, 16-17; Rom. 8:5-9, 2; 10:17)!

EMOTIONALISM VI. SYMPTOMS OF EMOTIONALISM A. Profess great emotional satisfaction, yet pay less attention to the details of God’s word (1 Cor. 4:6; 14:37, 26b). B. Tendency to hinder, shun & oppose those who emphasize Truth (1 Kgs 22:11, 24; Jude 19). C. Make excuses for emotional displays: “I can’t help it.” “The Spirit was leading me.” (Titus 2:4; Mt. 5:43-48; 1 Cor. 14:32-33)

EMOTIONALISM VII. EMOTIONALISM HAS SPREAD FAR A. Catholicism – mystical appeal. B. Southern Baptist – “I’d rather go with the feeling in my heart than a whole stack of Bibles!” C. Methodist – Warm feeling confirms salvation. D. Pentecostals – “Spirit speaks to my heart.” “Come expecting!” E. LDS – “It took me 3 years to tell the difference between my feelings and the leading of the Spirit.”

EMOTIONALISM CONCLUSION: A. We need to avoid the extremes of being UN-emotional & being HYPER-emotional. B. Emotion has a proper place, in subjection to & in harmony with God’s word (Acts 8:39). “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently” (1 Pet. 1:22)
