Timothy #4, Personal Instructions  Paul’s instructions were intended to benefit both: >Timothy, 4:6, 16a and >the Ephesian brethren, 4:16b.  Chapter 4 seems to be more toward the philosophy and practice of preaching….  Whereas Chapters 5-6 seem to more toward how Timothy is to treat brethren and what is he is to require of them.

Timothy #4, Personal Instructions  Chapter 4:6-11 The Philosophy of Preaching: >sound proclamation yields good service, v.6a > 2Tim.4:2 &>healthy nourishment in the faith & doctrine, v.6b “learning to do, and doing to learn” FFA motto But certain things are to be avoided: >worldly fables, v.7a; see also 1:3-4 >over-emphasis on bodily, rather than godly, discipline, vv.7b-11

Timothy #4, Personal Instructions  Chapter 4:12-16 The Practice of Preaching: >v.12a- “let no one look down on your youthfulness” cf. Titus 2:15 Examples: “that was real good- for someone his age” “preach that again when you’ve lived as long as I have!” “see if you still think that way in 20 years” So, how do you prevent this?

Timothy #4, Personal Instructions  Chapter 4:12-16 The Practice of Preaching: >v.12b- be an example of those who believe in: speech conduct love faith purity cf. Titus 2:7-8

Timothy #4, Personal Instructions  Chapter 4:12-16 The Practice of Preaching: >v.13a- READ the BOOK! No tool the preacher/christian possesses can replace or supercede his knowledge of the BOOK! > 2Tim.3:15; Hosea 4:6 >v.13b- Exhort! >v.13c- Teach! Remember 3 E’s: (educate, encourage, not enforce)

Timothy #4, Personal Instructions  Chapter 5:3-16 How to Treat Widows: with honor, v.3; if…. >she has no family to care for her, vv.4,5a >she is faithful to God, v.5b >sixty years or older, v.9a >wife of one man, v.9b >she has been exemplary of a Christian woman, v.10 (cf. Acts 9:36ff)

Timothy #4, Personal Instructions  Chapter 5:3-16 How to Treat Widows: but refuse…. >younger widows, v >idle gossips and busybodies, v.13 >those who have believing family, v.16

Timothy #4, Personal Instructions  Chapter 5:17-25 How to Treat Elders: worthy of double honor if… >they rule well, v.17a >they work hard at preaching/teaching, v.17b Why? v.18 Those who don’t rule well? >make sure, v.19 (cf.24-25) >rebuke before all, v.20 >without partiality, v.21 Because of this, v.22!

Timothy #4, Personal Instructions  Chapter 6:1-5 How to Treat Masters/Slaves: like brethren! >masters to be regarded with all honor so that God & doctrine may not be dishonored, v.1 >with respectful service, v.2. Anything else fails to measure up to sound doctrine! vv.3-5

Timothy #4, Personal Instructions  Chapter 6:6-21 How to Treat the Rich: Educate them! Three classes/levels/degrees of the Rich: 1. Those not rich who never will be, v.5 2.
