R ECAPITULATION : T HE P ROBLEMS IN P UBLIC P ARTICIPATION THE PROBLEM OF HEADDRESS I COR. IN RECOGNITION OF HEADSHIP - 11:3-16 Every man…having his head covered, dishonoureth his head… Every woman…with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head…11:4, 5 Founded on: 11:3, NIV Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the Head of Christ is God.

T HE R EASONS AND R ATIONALE BEHIND THE I NSTRUCTIONS Based on the Principle of Divine Headship and Hierarchy. I Cor. 11:3 1.For the Man: He ought not to Cover:  he is the image and glory of God (11:7; Gen.1:27)  the man is not of the woman (11:8; Gen. 2:22)  neither was the man created for the woman; (11:9a; Gen. 2:18)  Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? (11:14, 15; Gen. 2:25) But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all. I Cor. 15:28

Gen. 2:25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. Eden was not a nudist colony as wicked men have developed today. "They were naked, but yet they were not so. Their bodies were the clothing of their internal glory; and their internal glory was the clothing of their nakedness" (Delitzsch).

1. For the Man: He ought not to Cover. 2. For the Woman: She ought to Cover:  the woman is the glory of the man11:7b  the woman of [from] the man 11:8b  and [created] for the man 11:9b  and because of the angels. 11:10 cf. Eph. 3:10  if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her for her hair is given her for a covering. 11:15 3. For the Man and Woman: 11:11, 12 Both are not without the other, and one is of and by the other. Cp. Gen. 3:23-25

Genesis 2: And Jehovah God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof: 22 and the rib, which Jehovah God had taken from the man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 23 And the man said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. 24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. 25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Current Challenges: Exegesis = Exposition of text from Context Eisegesis = Explanation from outside Context. 1. Does “head” (Gk. kephale) mean source/origin? The head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. (11:3) Ct. Thus we say that the kephale of man is Christ, because he was excellently made through him, and the kephale of woman is man, because she was taken from his flesh, and the kephale of Christ is God, because he is from him according to nature” – Cyril of Alexandria. [See Jud.10:18; 11:8, 11, LXX] Can God be the Source/Origin of Christ? Ct. 15:28

2. Does the Order of Headship mean the Superiority or Inferiority of one party over the other? Consider the Rights, Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in the Godhead: Jesus being in very nature God did not consider equality with God (Rights), something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness and being found in appearance as a man, (Role) He humbled Himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross! (Responsibility) Phi. 2:5-8, NIV The Relationship: I and My Father are one. Jn. 10:30

The Rights, Roles, Responsibilities and Relationship in the Godhead: The Rights, Roles, Responsibilities Between Christ, the Man and the Woman. a.Their Rights. Jn. 1:12; Heb. 2:11; Gal. 3:28 b. Their Representation and Roles, Eph. 5:23ff c. Their Responsibilities. Eph. 5:22, 25; I Cor. 11:4, 7; 14:33b, 34a; I Tim. 2:8, 12 d. The Reasons: I Cor. 11:8, 9; I Tim. 2:13, 14 e. The Relationship: See #c above. as unto the Lord… as Christ cf. Eph. 5:28 even as Christ is the head of the church.Eph. 5:23  Husbands [anēr] love your wives [gynē],  The husband [anēr] is the head of the wife [gynē], even as Christ also loved the church.Eph. 5:25  Wives [gynē], submit yourselves unto your own husbands [anēr], as unto the Lord. Eph. 5:22

3. Does anēr mean husband and gynē mean wife? For the husband (anēr) is the head of the wife (gynē), even as Christ is the head of the church. (Eph. 5:23) ESV …the head of every man ( anēr ) is Christ, 11:3 the head of a wife ( gynē ) is her husband ( anēr ) 11:7 For a man ought not to cover his head, …but woman is the glory of man. GNT …Christ is supreme over every man, the husband is supreme over his wife… …For a man ought not to cover his head but woman reflects the glory of man. a)No Consistency in the translation – v. 3 cf. v. 7 b)The Context is when ye come together/the church. c)It Construes no sense in vv. 4 and 5 d) Long hair Covers all women (v. 15), not wives only. I Cor. 11:3: the head of every man (anēr) is Christ; and the head of the woman (gynē) is the man (anēr); and the head of Christ is God. (KJV)

4. There is no need for a woman to cover if she does not prophesy or pray. But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.I Cor. 11:5 Ct. Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak;…for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. I Cor. 14:34a, 35b But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. I Tim. 2:12 Cf. Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. 11:4 Does a man cover his head when not praying…?

5. Long hair is equivalent to a covering. For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.11:6 Covered in 11:6 and 11:4-14 is katakalupto – a Veil. But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.11:15 Covering in 11:15 is peribolaion – a Vesture. As Heb. 1:12 Can a woman shear or shave her hair when she has no covering (long hair) in 11:6?

6. Did not Jesus have long hair? Was He not a Nazarite? The Reproach of a Nazarite – Num. 6:2, 3, 5, 6 He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine…any liquor of grapes…there shall no razor come upon his head… he shall come at no dead body. Was Jesus a Nazarite? He…dwelt in a city called Nazareth… He shall be called a Nazarene.Mt. 2:23 The scribes and Pharisees…said …How is it that He …drinketh with publicans and sinners? Mk. 2:16 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out…Lk. 7:12

7. Were they to Conform to the Honourable Cultural Customs then? Notes from the Life Application Study Bible: We need to read it in the context of the situation in Corinth…seemingly insignificant…For a woman to uncover her head in public was a sign of loose morals…Greek women were used to worshipping without head coverings…Paul told the women who were not wearing head coverings to wear them; not because it was a scriptural command. But it kept the congregation from dividing over a petty issue that served only to take people’s minds off Christ.

7. Were they to Conform to the Honourable Cultural Customs then? Notes from the Life Application Study Bible: 11:14, 15 – Paul is saying that believers should look and behave in ways that are honourable within their own cultures. In many cultures long hair on men is considered appropriate and masculine. In Corinth, it was thought to be a sign of sexual perversion. And women with short hair were labelled prostitutes. Paul was saying that in the Corinthian culture, women should keep their long hair…The issue is similar with head coverings, considered a sign of rebellion in Jewish culture.

7. Were they to Conform to the Honourable Cultural Customs then? Notes from the Life Application Study Bible: I Tim. 2:12 Paul himself acknowledged that women publicly prayed and prophesied (I Cor. 11:5). Apparently, however, the women in the Ephesian church were abusing their newly acquired Christian freedom. Because these women were new converts and uneducated, they did not have the necessary experience in knowledge to teach those who already had extensive biblical education.

7. Were they to Conform to the Honourable Cultural Customs then? The Concern: Corinthian men and women should uncover or cover their heads to Conform to honourable culture. Contrast the good Current Customs then: Greek Custom: Women commonly participated in religious ceremonies without headcoverings. Jewish Custom: Men put on a kippa. Women veil their heads in public. Roman Custom: Male priests normally covered their heads for ceremonies. Church Custom: Men uncovered their heads and Women covered them. (I Cor. 11:16)

8. Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her. I Cor. 11:14, 15 The head of Jesus was created by a production team which took into consideration medical, archaeological, geographical and artistic evidence from the time of Jesus. Roman: Men and Women

a) Unto the church of God which is at Corinth…with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours. (1:2) b) And so ordain I in all churches. (7:17) c) …we have no such custom, neither the churches of God. (11:16) d) as in all churches of the saints. Let your women keep silence in the churches: (14:33, 34) e) as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. (16:1) f) The churches of Asia salute you. (16:19) 9. Were they only Corinthian Concerns? 10. Was Paul a misogynist? If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord. But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant. I Cor. 14:37, 38, NKJV But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
