He’s basically a con artist because he carries pig bones and sells them to people claiming they’re holy relics. At church, he would pull this stunt off to the entire congregation, and he was also the best at singing the collection song, we can assume its because he loves it so much
He’s set in the clergy class, right below the royalty & the noblemen. The clergy are supposed to take vows of poverty, but Chaucer’s Pardoner is as greedy as they come. He flaunts his wealth to everybody through his luxurious staff, gigantic wallet, and fine clothes.
The pardoner’s deadly sin is his avarice, or greed. He’ll do anything for money including scamming the good, churchgoing people that look up to him. He says in his actual tale (not just the prologue) that his greed is the only thing that drives him to live.
