JUDAS ISCARIOT Who was Judas Iscariot? 1. “A man of Keriot” 2. Disciple of Jesus Christ

Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax-gatherer; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed Him. JUDAS ISCARIOT Apostle of Jesus Christ 1. The devil entered even an apostle 2. The most noble religious privileges are powerless to save a man. 3. Christ is betrayed by one who enjoyed the intimacy of his friendship.

For it is not an enemy who reproaches me, Then I could bear it; Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me, Then I could hide myself from him. But it is you, a man my equal, My companion and my familiar friend. We who had sweet fellowship together (Psalms 55:12-14 NASB)

JUDAS ISCARIOT Who was Judas Iscariot? 1. “A man of Keriot” 2. Disciple of Jesus Christ 3. Apostle of Jesus Christ 4. Treasurer for the Apostles

Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who would betray Him, said, "Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it. But Jesus said, "Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial. "For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always." (John 12:4-8 NKJV)

JUDAS ISCARIOT Treasurer of the Apostles: 1. Position of trust and confidence 2. Faith in his honesty 3. Economical habits, aptitude for finance, love of bargaining – qualities associated with the love of money

THE PROGRESSION OF EVIL 1. Satan played a role in Judas’ life

Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?" He spoke of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for it was he who would betray Him, being one of the twelve. (John 6:70-71 NKJV)

And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Him (John 13:2 NKJV)

Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, "What you do, do quickly." (John 13:27 NKJV)

THE PROGRESSION OF EVIL 1. Satan played a role in Judas’ life 2. Judas had sold his soul to the devil through ambition and greed 3. Judas cunningly watched for a fitting opportunity to sell-out the Lord

Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, "What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?" And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him. (Matthew 26:14-16 NKJV)

So he promised and sought opportunity to betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude. (Luke 22:6 NKJV)

THE PROGRESSION OF EVIL 1. Satan played a role in Judas’ life 2. Judas had sold his soul to the devil through ambition and greed 3. Judas cunningly watched for a fitting opportunity to sell-out the Lord 4. Jesus gave Judas one last opportunity to repent

When Jesus had said these things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me." Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke. Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke. Then, leaning back on Jesus' breast, he said to Him, "Lord, who is it?"

Jesus answered, "It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it." And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, "What you do, do quickly." But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, "Buy those things we need for the feast," or that he should give something to the poor. Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night. (John 13:21-30 NKJV)

THE PROGRESSION OF EVIL 1. Satan played a role in Judas’ life 2. Judas had sold his soul to the devil through ambition and greed 3. Judas cunningly watched for a fitting opportunity to sell-out the Lord 4. Jesus gave Judas one last opportunity to repent 5. The betrayal – A kiss

Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people. Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him." Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed Him. But Jesus said to him, "Friend, why have you come?" Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him. (Matthew 26:47-50 NKJV)

The Rest Of The Story Judas realizes he has done wrong Judas realizes he has done wrong Judas is sorrowful – Judas is sorrowful – What horrible deeds men do for money! Judas tries to return the money Judas tries to return the money

Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." And they said, "What is that to us? You see to it!" (Matthew 27:3-4 NKJV)

The Rest Of The Story Judas realizes he has done wrong Judas realizes he has done wrong Judas is sorrowful – Judas is sorrowful – What horrible deeds men do for money! Judas tries to return the money Judas tries to return the money Judas did not do that which would make things right between himself and God – He went to the wrong place for comfort! Judas did not do that which would make things right between himself and God – He went to the wrong place for comfort!

Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. (Matthew 27:5 NKJV)

Now this man acquired a field with the price of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out. (Acts 1:18 NAS95)
