Overcoming Worry Matthew 6:25–34

What causes you to worry? Can you do anything about the things you worry about? Worry is like an old man in a rocking chair. There is lots of movement but you do not go anywhere.

I.Worry is showing a lack of trust in our Master Therefore, “For this reason.” God is your master The slaves only responsibility is to His master Do not be anxious Worrying is showing a lack of trust for our Master

Worry – to strangle or choke Causes more mental and physical afflictions than anything else. Substance of worry is extremely small compared to our mental picture Worry is opposite of contentment

Contentment comes because God Provides for His own Jehovah-Jireh Genesis 22:14 (ESV) So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

Philippians 4:19 (ESV) And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Matthew 6:25b (ESV) … Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

II.Worry Is Unnecessary Because of Our Father No need to Worry-Have you forgotten who your Father is? Worry About Food Worry About Longevity Worry About Clothing If God cares for the flowers and grass, how much more is He concerned about you.

Worry is not a trivial sin because it strikes a blow at God’s love at God’s integrity. Worry declares our heavenly Father to be untrustworthy

Ephesians 1:18–19 (ESV) 18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might

III.Worry Is Unreasonable Because of Our Faith Worry is inconsistent with our faith in God.

2 Peter 3:11 (ESV) Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness

IV. Worry Is Unwise Because of Our Future

Matthew 6:34 (ESV) “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

Lamentations 3:22–23 (ESV) 22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Do not be anxious for tomorrow Isaiah 26:3–4 (ESV) 3 You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. 4 Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.

V.How do you stop worrying?

Philippians 4:4–9 (NLT) 4 Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! 5 Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. 6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. 9 Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me— everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

Steps to take Rejoice in the Lord Rejoice in the Lord-Command Let your reasonableness (gentle spirit) be known to all. – The Lord is at hand (The Lord is coming soon)
