INTRODUCTION 4 What is food? What is security? What is food security?

What are the pillars or dimensions for food security? 5 Food security can be based on three (3) main pillars or dimensions. These are: FOOD AVAILABILITY FOOD ACCESSIBILITY FOOD UTILIZATION /USAGE The various interventions taken by the Ghana government to ensuring food security in the country. These are: 1. Youth in agriculture program (YIAP) 2. Agricultural mechanization 3. National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) 4. African Monitoring of Environment for Sustainable Development (AMESD) 5. Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 6. Savanna Accelerated Development Authority (SADA)

BODY What is the Ghanaian government doing to improve food security? 6 AGRICULTURAL MECHANIZATION.  It is government of Ghana’ initiative.  The agricultural mechanization services enterprise centers (AMSEC) was established to offer tractor to farmers to hire all over the country for land preparation services such as ploughing. YOUTH IN AGRICULTURE PROGRAMME (YIAP).  It is government of Ghana’ initiative.  It was first conceived by the late president of Ghana, Professor Evans John Atta Mills from 1996 to  It is to motivate the youth to accept and appreciate farming as a commercial venture, thereby taking up farming as a life-time vocation to ensure food security.

the government of ghana has been providing subsidized agricultural machines to individual farmers and private enterprise since Images on Youth In Agriculture Program (YIAP) Images on Agriculture Mechanization 7 African Monitoring of Environment for Sustainable Development (AMESD)

Some functions of NAFCO includes:  To provide window to farmers to produce in large quantities 8 NAFCO over the years has boosted food stock through: Stabilizing Food Grain Supply and Price. Ensuring Emergency Food Reserve. Therefore, NAFCO food reserves could be used as an emergency food relief. National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) It is a government institution that buys excess products from farmers, stores it, distribute and even sell it at affordable prices during shortage of products. The use of earth observation technologies or satellites to know the changes in climate and seasons

CONCLUSION Problems of implementation of policies are:  Poor road network.  Inadequate information (database) on farmers. 9  The policies concerning the improvement of food security should be a legal mandatory tool to every government in their tenure of office.
